The 1983 Avensa Douglas DC-9 crash occurred on 11 March 1983 when an Avensa Douglas DC-9 airliner on a domestic flight in Venezuela from Caracas Airport to Barquisimeto Airport where it landed hard, slid off of the runway and exploded.[1][2] Twenty-two passengers and one crew member died.[1][2]
Accident
The Douglas DC-9, registration YV-67C, was on an internal flight when it made an ILS approach in thick fog at Barquisimeto Airport, Venezuela.[1] The DC-9 landed hard 1015 metres beyond the runway threshold, causing the landing gear to collapse, and the aircraft subsequently slid off the runway and exploded.[1] The aircraft was carrying 45 passengers and five crew, of whom one crew member and 22 of the passengers died, while ten passengers were seriously injured.[1]
Investigation
The probable cause was 'Improper in-flight decisions and inadequate supervision of the flight were contributory factors.'[1]
