The 2016–17 Big Ten men's basketball season began with practices in October 2016, followed by the start of the 2016–17 NCAA Division I men's basketball season in November.
The Conference held its preseason media day on October 13 in Washington, D.C.[1] The season will begin on November 11 and conference play is slated to start on December 27.[2] The Big Ten Tournament will be held from March 8 through March 12 at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C.[3] It will be the first Big Ten Conference Tournament in Washington, D.C. The winner of the tournament will receive the Big Ten's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Indiana is the defending regular season conference champion. Michigan State is the defending Big Ten Tournament champion.
