The 2016 FIA GT World Cup was the second edition of the FIA GT World Cup held on the streets of Macau on 20 November 2016. The race was contested with GT3-spec cars and in contrast to the inaugural event it was not a non-championship race part of the GT Asia Series. The event promoter, the Automobile General Association Macau-China (AAMC), appointed the Stéphane Ratel Organisation (SRO) to help bring a grid together.

Report

Main Race

Only a single lap was completed by the drivers in the main race, with a red flag being called just seconds into the race as a result of a crash for Ricky Capo. The Australian had hit the barriers at considerable speed necessitating barrier repairs, delaying proceedings considerably. When the race once again got underway, Earl Bamber in a Porsche made a clean overtake on the leading car of Audi factory driver Laurens Vanthoor. Following in Bamber's slipstream, the now second-placed Vanthoor made a mistake through a fast kink which caused his WRT to get airborne and flip onto its roof. Vanthoor was unharmed in the incident, but it caused a second, race-ending red flag to be called. Unusually, Vanthoor was declared the winner despite having caused the race-ending incident, as the classifications were based on the driver positions on the previous lap.[1] Additionally, Bamber, who had been leading the race at the stoppage, was demoted to 4th as a consequence of a five second grid penalty.
