Akhilesh Das

Dr Akhilesh Das Gupta[1] (b. 1961) is an Indian politician[2] & a prominent educationist. At present, he is the President[3] of Badminton Association of India, Vice President of Badminton Asia Confederation, Member - Executive Council of Badminton World Federation & Vice President of Indian Olympic Association .

He is the Chairman of Babu Banarasi Das Educational Society, Lucknow which runs the following institutions:

  1. Babu Banarasi Das University, Lucknow
  2. Northern India Engineering College, Delhi[4]

Earlier he had long been a Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament with the Indian National Congress party for two terms & with the BSP for one term.

He is the son of Banarasi Das, former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh.

Das began in 1993, as the mayor of Lucknow. He was also the secretary of the Congress parliamentary Party directly under President of the party Sonia Gandhi from May 2003 to Dec 2005.

In 1996 while with the Indian National Congress party, he was nominated (elected by the State Legislature) to the Rajya Sabha in 1996 and 2002, and then by the BSP in November 2008.[5] He served as Minister for Steel in the Manmohan Singh cabinet.

On November 5, 2014, Das, quit the BSP party.[6] On November 6, 2014, the BSP chief Mayawati alleged that had offered her Rs 100 crore for renominating him to the Rajya Sabha.[6] Das's term in the Upper House ends on November 25, 2014.[6] Das denied the allegations and said that it was the BSP leadership that was extorting candidates, adding that he did not ask to join the BSP but that Mayawati had pursued him, even going so far as to personally dictate his Congress party resignation letter.[6]

Personal life

Das done schooling from Colvin Taluqdars' College, Lucknow. Das holds degrees in law, public administration and management, and a doctorate in business administration.[7] He is married to Mrs. Alka Das who serves as the Chancellor of Babu Banarasi Das University, Lucknow. He has two children namely son Mr. Viraj Sagar Das & daughter Ms. Sona Das.

The financial investigation unit (FIU) under finance ministry has recently prepared a report showing dubious transactions running into several thousand crores related to a company run by Anand Kumar and his wife Vichitra Lata. The FIU has approached Enforcement Directorate and CBDT for investigations into the suspicious transactions.
The ED and income tax department both will soon begin formal investigations into the transactions, top sources told TOI.

Sources said that a suspicious transactions report of the FIU-IND ( Financial Investigation Unit-India), states that 10 accounts linked to M/s DLA Infrastructures (P) Ltd and its directors, found in the FIU database, had several transactions which suggest that huge amounts were debited and credited between January 2011 and September 2014. Kumar and Lata are directors in the company.

The sum total of all debits and credits in these accounts from January 2011 up to September 2014 comes to Rs 2149.54 crore and Rs 2165.08 crore respectively, according to the sources.
Mayawati was chief minister of UP till March 2012.
"The continuous debits and credits in these accounts are dubious in nature where most of them are cash transactions, or deposits by several other companies registered at different cities," said the source.
This suspicious transactions report related to alleged 'dubious' transactions of Mayawati's brother has been sent to the investigation agencies a few weeks ago with a detailed list of companies and the transactions.
Earlier, FIU had sent two suspicious transactions reports related to Anand Kumar and Vichitra Lata, wherein big transactions were reported, in June 2012. Sources said that the transactions were not above Rs 2000 crore then.
However, the investigations at that time were buried. Congress was in power at the Centre and the BSP had come to the rescue of the UPA, helping the coalition avoid an embarrassing defeat in the vote on FDI in retail.
In the fresh report, FIU has asked that the investigation be carried out at the earliest and its result should be communicated in due course.
Anand Kumar could not be contacted for his comments. An email seeking response sent on an email ID reportedly belonging to DLA infrastructure went unanswered.
BSP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Ambeth Rajan refused to comment on the matter saying Anand Kumar is not a BSP member.
Earlier, Bharatiya Janata Party leader Kirit Somaiya had claimed that Anand Kumar had floated as many as 76 companies to launder money and that there were investments in these companies from tax havens.
