Akkur is a small town in Nagapattinam district, Tamil Nadu, India 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) from Mayiladuthurai Town. Akkur is located 38.6 km distance from the district's main city Nagapattinam and 223 km from the state capital, Chennai. Nearby towns include Mayiladuthurai (10.1 km), Sirkazhi (13.9 km), Kollidam (18.6 km) and Kuttalam (19.3 km).

Temples and mosques

Temples include Sri Thanthonriswarar Temple, Perumal Temple and Mariyamman Temple.Akkur is Thevara Padal petra Sthalam. Akkur Thevaram is very famous devotional song sung by the Nalvar. Thevaram has a pathigam, which praises the life and service of Vellalas, who lived here, for their dedicated agricultural efforts and also philanthrophy. Later Arunagiri Nathar also visited Akkur and sang a song in praise of Lord Subramaniar of this Temple. Thanthonri means the Shivalingam appeared on its own while digging a pond which is located in front. The Aayirathil Oruvar Sannithi is located on the north of main moolavar. It is told that a sage was to make anna dhanam to 1001 sivanadiyars and he could get only 1000 and was waiting for the 1001st keeping himself hungry. Lord Shiva came in disguise as 1001st sivanadiyar and made his prayer complete and hence Lord Shiva is named "Aayirathu Oruvar". This temple is made as Maada Koil Type with elevated staircases where elephants can not climb. Olden Kings were in favour of Maada Koils to avoid entry of elephants inside the shrine. Akkur is also the birthplace of Sirappuli Nayanar one of the 63 Nayanmars. There is a festival called Sirappuli Nayanar Guru Poojai for every year The Mariyamman Temple festival happens each year in April over 11 days. The Rajagoplaswamy Perumal Koil is also well worshipped. Vishnu is laying position.[2] The District's biggest mosque is here.

The Famous Abirami Amman Temple (Thirukadaiyur) is located nearby. Chola King Kochchenkanan built the Temple as a Maada Kovil. At this Temple Lord Shiva and Amman Lordess Vaal Nedum Kanni Amman are giving dharshan adjacent to each other , as if sitting in marriage i.e Thirumankkolam. Similar dharshan can be had at Thirumancheri. This small village is known for its share of Freedom Fighters namely, A.S.K. Vadivel, Ramalingam Mudaliar (Who was later MLA for one term) and others.

Education

The area offers two higher secondary school, two high schools, and many primary schools and a Technical Training Institute (ITI).Oriental Arabic Higher Secondary School in Akkur is the first Arabic school started in Tamil Nadu. Nearby higher education centers are AVC College (Mannanpandal,Mayiladuthurai), AVC College of Engg(Mannanpandal, Mayiladuthurai),AVC Polytechnic College (Mannanpandal,Mayiladuthurai), DonBosco Polytechnic College(Kazhiappanallur), TBML college (Porayar), Annamalai University (Chidambaram), Dharmapuram Arts college (Mayiladuthurai).
