American International School of Guangzhou (AISG) is an American international school in Guangzhou, Guangdong, China. The elementary school campus is on Ersha Island in Yuexiu District while the middle and high school campus is in Science Park[note 1], Huangpu District (formerly Luogang District).[2]

History

The school was founded in 1981 to educate the children of the staff of the American Consulate. It was then based in the Dong Fang Hotel. Students of other nationalities were later admitted and the school relocated to the Garden Hotel in 1985. In 1987 the school received accreditation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges to teach Kindergarten to Grade 8. In 1994 AISG moved into a purpose-built school in the Greenery[note 2],[3] a housing estate in the Tianhe District.

The High School (Grades 9 through 12) was added and accredited during SY1996-97, and three students formed the first graduating class in 1998. Also in 1998, ASG was reorganized legally as a non-profit corporation in the U.S.A., which then contracted with the school entity registered in China, for the provision of educational services. As part of this process, the school changed its name to the American International School of Guangzhou and gained official recognition by the People’s Republic of China as a school serving expatriate children. In 2001, AISG received authorization from the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) to offer the IB Diploma Programme. In August of 2002, AISG moved to a new purpose-built facility on Ersha Island, and in 2004 received permission from the IBO to offer the Primary Years Program. Grades K-12 were all housed at the Ersha Campus until 2007, when the Middle School and High School divisions moved to a new purpose-built campus located at Science Park, a district in eastern Guangzhou. AISG’s Early Childhood Center, which teaches preschool students from age 3, was also added to the Ersha campus site at this time. AISG celebrated its 35th anniversary during the SY 2016-17 honoring its heritage and inspiring bright futures.

E-Technology and 1:1 Laptop and iPad Programs

AISG believes in the opportunities technology brings to learning. We know that technology in our school is much more than all the hardware and services we offer.

It’s about our faculty guiding students to communicate, collaborate ,create and innovate, both inside and outside the classroom. Our students’ learning is enhanced through technology every day, thanks to our specially trained teachers, our planning for the future and the infrastructure available on both our campuses.

AISG has put a variety of tools into students hands that help them construct and share their learning in all classes. This includes a progressively implemented an iPad program in Preschool to Grade 5 and a 1:1 laptop program Grades 6 through 12, as digital teaching and learning skills become increasingly important. Our students make their learning visible with 3D printers, vinyl cutters, drones, robots and other technologies which truly focus on the future our students will inherit.

iPad and Laptop Program Platform: Apple Computers

AISG uses Apple computers in it’s 1:1 program and tablet programs. We chose Apple because of their high reliability and ease of operation. The vast majority of China international schools use Apple technology in their 1:1 programs. There is a vibrant and well developed community of support for integrating Apple technology into learning.

AISG has an authorized Apple Service Center at the Science Park campus. The friendly, English-speaking service center staff is available during school hours. By maintaining an Apple Service Center at AISG, students and faculty have access to Apple’s highly respected warranty service right on campus. If a computer breaks, it can be fixed on campus, instead of sending it out to an Apple Service Center in town.

Apple laptops for students in Grades 6 to 12 are purchased by the parents, while students in elementary school make use of iPads owned by the school. Computer specifications, information regarding the use of a Mac you already own and the overall implementation procedures are available on our website at http://ramlog.aisgz.org/digital/.

Catering

Catering services on both campuses are provided by Chartwell's. Students have the option to bring food from home or to purchase foods from Chartwell's at lunch. Catering is available in a cafeteria and at the cafe. Chartwell's arranges different menus for every day in the school year. Former complaints of the quality of the food have been addressed and there have been improvements. However, there are still frequent complaints from the student body.
