An Klondike (Irish for "The Klondike") is an Irish Western television series first broadcast on TG4 in 2015. It is also known by its international title Dominion Creek when streaming in the US on Netflix and on Acorn.
An edited version of the first series of the show, cut to 110 minutes, was released theatrically at the Galway Film Fleadh in August 2015, so as to be in contention for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.[1]
Production
Created and directed by Dathaí Keane, the show filmed on location in Connemara, Ireland, with the County Galway scenery standing in for the Yukon. The town of Dominion Creek was built near Oughterard, while the mining scenes were shot at Glengowla Mines, a 19th-century silver and lead mine.
A second series was filmed in the summer of 2016 and will air in early 2017.[2][3]
Plot
Three Irish emigrant brothers travel from Montana to the Yukon, Canada during the Klondike gold rush (1896–99) in the hope of striking it rich. They settle in the town of Dominion Creek, where they feud with Jacob Hopkins, the man who runs the town.
Reception
An Klondike has received mostly positive reviews, The Irish Times noting "I’m not sure there's TV gold in An Klondike, but you can’t fault its ambition and style",[4] also noting its similarities to Deadwood.[5]
In 2016, the film version of An Klondike won four IFTAs - for drama, actor, make-up and script.
