Anca Verma (born 8 August 1987) is the Romanian-born wife of arms dealer Abhishek Verma and a former Miss Universe Romania.[1] Under her maiden name, Anca Neacșu, she had a career as a supermodel in Romania[2] before marrying Abhishek.[3]

Career

Verma graduated from University of Galati, Romania with a master's degree in Engineering. During her early days in college, she appeared on national and European TV channels as the host of several talk shows. She also performed at mega events as a celebrity in Romania. In the modelling world, she won the coveted Miss Romania title and was the most sought after model in Romania. Soon she quit modelling career and joined Atlas Telecom Network Romania,[4] a mobile service provider and was appointed the Deputy General Manager of Bucharest operations. Upon her marriage with Abhishek in 2006, she became Abhishek's lieutenant in his global weapons trade and defense supplies business.[5] when in 2011 she bought into 51% equity and was appointed the Managing Director[6] of SIG SAUER India,[7] a joint venture with the multinational weapons contractor.[8][9]

Controversies

Verma and her husband are accused of corruption and money laundering and were arrested by the CBI for supposedly bribing Indian defense officials in order to secure billion dollar weapons contracts.[10][11]

On 8 June 2012 Verma and her husband Abhishek were imprisoned in Tihar Jail, Delhi.[12][13][14] In 2014 she raised allegations of harassment and extortion against an Assistant Superintendent of prison, and a high-level inquiry was ordered by the Indian Government; the officers found culpable as a result were later dismissed.[15]

Verma's bail plea was rejected by the Delhi High Court in March 2015.[16] On May 20, 2016 court granted bail to her after four years in prison. According to Indian investigators their attempts to freeze Verma's offshore bank accounts in tax haven Principality of Liechtenstein were unsuccessful as the Liechtenstein government rejected the request from Enforcement Directorate India, citing that their request received through diplomatic channels is a mere 'fishing expedition' as no real charges were brought forward that could constitute a criminal offence in Liechtenstein or the European Union.[17]
