Andrew O. Apple (1845 – June 7, 1890) was an American soldier who received the Medal of Honor for valor during the American Civil War.
Biography
Apple was born in 1845 at Northampton, Pennsylvania but later moved to West Virginia.
Apple served in the American Civil War in Company I, 12th West Virginia Infantry for the Union Army and reached the rank of coporal. He received the Medal of Honor on May 12, 1865 for his actions at Fort Gragg during the Third Battle of Petersburg. After three other members of the regiment were killed carrying the regimental flag, Apple carried it for the remainder of the engagement.
Apple moved to Elgin, Illinois after the war, where he became the city's fire marshal. He died on June 7, 1890 at the age of 45 and is buried in the Bluff City Cemetery in Elgin.
