Antonio Giovanni Corbisiero (born 17 November 1984 in Exmouth, Devon) is an English semi-professional footballer currently playing for Aberystwyth Town. He previously played professionally for Swansea City and semi-professionally for Newport County and Llanelli.
Career
Corbisiero, a right-footed midfielder of Irish-Italian parentage, began his career as a trainee with Swansea City, turning professional in August 2002. his league debut came on 30 August 2003 when he was a second-half substitute for Andy Robinson in Swansea's 4-1 win at home to Mansfield Town. He played four more times that season, starting just one game, a 3-2 defeat at home to Hull City, although Corbisiero was replaced by Leyton Maxwell at half-time.
He was an awarded a new one-year contract in June 2004,[1] but failed to appear in the Swansea first team the following season and had two loan spells with Newport County (in December 2004[2] and April 2005[3]) before being released in May 2005 by Swansea manager Kenny Jackett.[4] He joined subsequently joined Newport County in August 2005,[5] but was released in September 2005 and joined Llanelli the following month.[6]
He proved a fans favourite with The Reds due to his impressive work rate and netted 15 goals from 216 Welsh Premier League appearances. He also played important roles in big European wins in competitions such as the Champions League, UEFA Cup and Europa League.
In January 2013, Llanelli entered financial difficulties and Corbisiero was allowed to join Aberystwyth Town.[7][8] Corbisiero signed a contract until July 2014. During the summer of 2013, Aberystwyth Town appointed Corbisiero as 'First Team Coach' in addition to his academy coaching duties.[9]
Antonio joined Aberystwyth Town in January 2013, having won the Welsh Premier League, the Welsh Cup and the League Cup during his seven years with Llanelli. He also played in the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Cup and the UEFA Europa League with the club he skippered and in total, scored 15 goals from 206 (+10) Welsh Premier appearances. Antonio moved to the area before signing, and his calmness and quality on the ball helped Aberystwyth to safety in his first season. In the Summer of 2013 Corbisiero was made first team Coach, alongside running the U16 Academy squad, and in two and a half seasons in Black and Green has gone on to play in the Welsh Cup Final in May 2014, and the UEFA Europa League in 2014–5. Primarily a midfielder who can also play at right back or on the wing, Antonio's work rate on the pitch is second to none and he is an excellent example to the Young Players he coaches at the Academy.
