Anusha Rahman Urdu: انوشہ رحمان is a Pakistani politician and lawyer who serves as the Minister of State of Information Technology and Telecommunication and a Member of the National Assembly of Pakistan. She is a member of the Central Executive Committee of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League.[1]
After graduating from University College London she worked as a in-house corporate legal counsel for Telenor Pakistan.[2] She was elected for the first time as a Member of the National Assembly of Pakistan in 2008 and served on the Standing Committee on Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs. She also sits on the board of directors of Punjab Educational Endowment Fund.[3]
As in-charge of Pakistan's I.T policy she has been responsible for carrying out the Pakistani Telecom Spectrum Auction and winning Pakistan a seat in the administrative council of the International Telecommunication Union.[4][5][6] In 2015 she won the GEM-TECH Global Achievers 2015 award for her efforts to empower women through technology, it was jointly awarded by the UN Women and the International Telecommunication Union.[7]
Education
Anusha Rahman is a lawyer by profession and holds a master's degree in law from the University College London in the United Kingdom. Her specialisation was in the law and economics of regulated industries, networks and markets.
Her legal practice has been in constitutional, corporate, information technology and telecommunication law, and other than having worked with top law firms, she also worked as in-house corporate legal counsel for a multinational mobile telecommunication operator in Pakistan.
Political career
Anusha Rahman has been affiliated with several political posts representing the PML(N) political party. She has been a Member of the National Assembly of Pakistan since 2008. She has also represented on the National Assembly Standing Committees of Law, Justice & Parliamentary Affairs; Information Technology, Science & Technology, and the sub-committee reviewing electoral laws. Within her political party, she was Secretary Organisation-President PML (N), member of the PML-N manifesto committee, election committee and legal committee.
She has been the convener of the sub-committees of the National Assembly Standing Committee of Information tasked to look into the transparency of the spectrum auction for 3G and legislation of Grey Trafficking.
Anusha is in the Board of Punjab Educational Endowment Fund and Government Fatima Jinnah College for Women, Lahore. Her previous positions in the Party include Central Vice-President of the PML-N's Lawyer's Wing, and Deputy Convener, PML-N, Legal and Anti Rigging Wing. She also assisted the Parliamentary Committee on Constitutional Reforms that worked on 18th Amendment. Anusha during her 2008–13 term, was the General Secretary of the Young Parliamentary Forum of the National Assembly, and was also the founding member of the Parliamentary Caucus against Corruption. As convener of the Legal Committee, she formulated the 'Chief Minister Punjab, Women Empowerment Package, 2012.
Publication
During the Pakistani general election, 2008, she co-authored an election publication: ‘Corrupt and Illegal Practices – A New Paradigm of Blatant Violations'. Anusha is a regular writer in the national newspapers.
