Arter is a non-profit art space located on the Istiklal Avenue, Beyoglu, Istanbul.
An initiative of the Vehbi Koç Foundation (VKF), Arter was inaugurated in 2010 with the aim of offering a sustained infrastructure for producing and exhibiting contemporary art. Arter has been presenting solo and group exhibitions, providing a platform of national and international visibility for artistic practices, while encouraging and funding the production of contemporary artworks. The institution's programme also features bilingual (Turkish/English) publications accompanying each exhibition as well as artist talks, exhibition tours and performances.
Building
The building that currently hosts Arter is thought to have been built in the 1910s by Petraki Meymaridis Efendi, who was one of the architects of the 6th Municipal District Office (Beyoglu). It was registered as "Meymaret Han", as indicated in Jacques Pervititch's insurance maps.[1]
The building was transformed into an exhibition space as a result of the restoration work carried out under the supervision of architect Fahrettin Ayanlar in 2009. The renewed building features exhibition galleries with a total floor area of 675 m2 spread over three floors.
History
Arter's inaugural exhibition "Starter"[2] (8 May–31 January 2010) presented a selection of works from the Vehbi Koç Foundation Contemporary Art Collection.[3]
Since its inauguration, Arter has hosted solo exhibitions by artists including Nevin Aladağ, Volkan Aslan, Kutluğ Ataman, Berlinde de Bruyckere, Mat Collishaw, Mona Hatoum, Deniz Gül, Ali Kazma, Füsun Onur, Patricia Piccinini, Sophia Pompéry and Marc Quinn as well as featuring group exhibitions.
In line with its mission to support artistic production, Arter[4] encourages the creation of new works for each exhibition. "Second Exhibition" [5] (28 November 2010 – 13 March 2011) and "Envy, Enmity, Embarrassment"[6](24 January–7 April 2013) are two exhibitions solely of commissioned works.
Within the context of new productions, Arter also initiated a series of sonic art projects beginning with Erdem Helvacıoğlu's exhibition "Freedom to the Black" [7](10–22 February 2012) and continuing with Sarkis’ exhibition "Interpretation of Cage / Ryoanji" [8] (15 November 2013 – 12 January 2014).
Between 15 November 2013 and 12 January 2014, Arter introduced Bahane (lit. pretext, occasion) on its second floor, a shared space "for exploring, working and hanging out either individually or collectively". Conceptually linked with the three concurrent solo exhibitions on Arter's remaining floors, Bahane [9] was conceived as a collective space where people browsed and read books; explored videos, films and documentaries; and participated in workshops, discussions and talks or simply hung out.
Furthermore, Arter hosted the Istanbul Biennial as one of the main venues for its 13th and 14th editions.[10]
Publications
Arter's programme also features bilingual books (Turkish/English) that accompany each exhibition. Each Arter book is a self-standing publication tailored to respond to the conceptual framework of an exhibition both in terms of editorial structure and design. All of Arter's publications include at least one new commissioned essay on the relevant exhibition or the artist.
In 2013, the exhibition book Aslı Çavuşoğlu - The Stones Talk, designed by Arter's graphic designer (2010–2015) Esen Karol, has been selected amongst the best 50 book designs at the 50 Books/50 Covers competition organized by Design Observer. [11] In 2014, the book of Füsun Onur's "Through the Looking Glass" exhibition, again designed by Esen Karol, has been included in the same selection.[12]
