Audrey Elkington

The Ven. Audrey Anne Elkington (born 1 November 1957) is the current Archdeacon of Bodmin.

Early life

Elkington was born on 1 November 1957 to Henry and Alexandra King.[1] She studied Biochemistry at St Catherine's College, University of Oxford.[2] She graduated Bachelor of Arts (BA) in 1980.[1] She then undertook post-graduate research at the University of East Anglia where she completed her Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in 1983 entitled "Streptomyces gene fusions involving the Escherichia coli B-glactosidase gene".[1][2]

Career

Elkington felt the call to ministry during her postgraduate studies,[2] but the Church of England did not a that time support female priests. Therefore, in 1988 she was made a deaconess, the only ministry then open to women.[1] In 1992, the General Synod of the Church of England voted to ordain women and she began the path to priesthood. She was ordained deacon in 1992 and priest in 1994 (the first year women were ordained priests).[1]

She was appointed Archdeacon of Bodmin in 2011.
