Austin McKenzie (born 16 March 1993) is an Australian ice hockey player currently playing for the Melbourne Ice in the Australian Ice Hockey League and is a member of the Australian national team.
Playing career
McKenzie first played for the Melbourne Jets of the Victorian Ice Hockey Association in 2009 before moving to Canada and joining the Ontario Hockey Academy.[1] McKenzie spent two seasons at the Academy playing for the Midget AA team in the 2009-10 season before moving up the following season to play for the Academy's Mavericks 1 Midget AAA team in the OEMHL.[1] McKenzie left the Academy at the end of the 2010-11 season and returned to Australia where he signed with the Melbourne Ice of the Australian Ice Hockey League (AIHL).[1] McKenzie played 16 games in his first season with the Ice, scoring four points and helped the team win the 2011 Goodall Cup.[1] McKenzie earned a more permanent position in his second year with the Ice, playing in 23 games and winning his second Goodall Cup title and the inaugural Trans-Tasman Champions League with the Ice.[1][2] At the end of his second season with the Ice McKenzie signed with the Melbourne Blackhawks of the Australian Junior Ice Hockey League (AJIHL) to play in the inaugural 2012-13 season which ran during the AIHL's off-season.[1] He played in 15 games of the 2012-13 AJIHL season, scoring 33 points including 21 points.[1] In 2013 he returned for his third season with the Ice, increasing his scoring rate with 14 points in 27 games.[1] He also returned to play in the AJIHL following the 2013 AIHL season, playing for the Blackhawks who had been renamed the Melbourne Whalers for the 2013-14 AJIHL season.[1]
McKenzie was first selected to represent Australia in 2009 where he joined the national under-18 team to compete in the 2009 IIHF World U18 Championship Division III Group A tournament being held in Taipei, Chinese Taipei.[3] Australia finished the tournament in first played, earning McKenzie his first gold medal.[3] He continued to play for the national under-18 team for the next two years and in 2011 was named one of the team alternate captains for the 2011 IIHF World U18 Championship Division III Group A tournament.[1][4][5] McKenzie won his second gold medal and recorded 12 points in five games.[5][6] The following year McKenzie selected for the national under-20 team to compete at the 2012 IIHF World U20 Championship Division II Group B tournament and was named as one of the teams alternate captains.[1][7] Australia finished in fifth place while McKenzie recorded two points in five games and finished with a plus-minus of –8.[8] The following year he lost his position as alternate captain but improved his scoring rate, recording four points in five games in the team's 2013 Division II Group B tournament being held in Belgrade, Serbia.[9][10] In 2014 McKenzie was selected for the national senior team to compete in the 2014 IIHF World Championship Division II Group A tournament and he returned to Belgrade for the second year in a row.[11] Australia finished in fourth place while McKenzie failed to record any points during the tournament.[12]
