Avinash Pol

Dr. Avinash Pol is a dental surgeon from the village Beblewadi near Satara, Maharashtra, India. He is known for his works in rural areas in Satara. Pol adopted villages in Satara district to turn them into clean abodes. He has been awarded the Nirmal Gram award by the president of India.

While giving the award, Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam asked him, "While cleaning the teeth of people, how come you started cleaning the villages?".

"I consider problems as my patients... and the public as my NGO. There is nothing beyond these two," says the doctor, who converted a dry area into an overflowing water body. He has given life to the city of Satara which was lost in unbearable stink and piling garbage. Residents of Satara thank Dr Avinash Pol for the lake, which is now full with about 10 crore litres of potable water available throughout the year. While successfully playing his role as a medico, Dr Pol has been able to revive lakes like Bichukale, Palshi, Kirkasal, Pavana and Jakhangaon in Satara, Akoladev and Ghanewadi of Jalna and Kingaon of Aurngabad. His project of linking 15 wells and two borewells has turned out to be a unique initiative in the State. Dr Avinash Pol has, thus, been able to make a major contribution through water conservation. Efforts taken by him for the last 16-17 years have borne fruits.[1]

He has also received the Dr. Anita Avachat award by Muktangan. This award is presented to those who have shown courage to fight in the face of life’s complex situations.[2]
