The Bahraini passport is issued to citizens of Bahrain for international travel. They are made available through the General Directorate of Nationality, Passports & Residence. This institution, one of the earliest of its kind in the region, first issued passports in 1929.[1] It was criticized in 1996 by journalist Robert Fisk for its refusal to renew the passports of some Bahraini nationals, thus imposing an effective exile on these individuals.[2]
