Ballylifford

Ballylifford (from Irish Baile Leithearr, meaning "townland of the short turn") is a townland in County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. It is within the civil parish of Ballinderry, on the western shores of Lough Neagh, and is part of Mid-Ulster District. Many of the houses in the area have been built along Ballinderry Bridge Road.
Education
The only school in the area, Ballylifford Primary School (formerly Ballylifford National School), is a Catholic primary school for children between the ages of four and 11.
Sport
The local Gaelic Athletic Association club is Ballinderry Shamrocks GAC who have won the Derry Senior Football Championship thirteen times, second only to Bellaghy GAC who have won it twenty-one times.
People of interest
Seán Larkin was a member of the Irish Volunteers and hunger striker from Bellagherty, a townland of Ballinderry less than 1 km from Ballylifford. He attended Ballylifford National School as a boy. He was a member of the Irish Volunteers and later the 3rd Western Division Flying Column of the Irish Republican Army. He fought in the Irish War of Independence and after the signing of the Anglo-Irish Treaty, he fought on the anti-treaty side of the Irish Civil War. He was opposed to the partition of Ireland and was captured and imprisoned by Free State forces close to the end of the war. He was executed by the Free State on 14 March 1923.
