Bhandara ( pronunciation ) is a City and Municipal Council and headquarters of Bhandara district in the state of Maharashtra, India.

Overview

Bhandara is an agricultural centre for the farmers around its region majorly growing rice. The city speaks regional languages Marathi .The city has the crossing of National Highway No. 6. The city is split between two rivers one is Wainganga and other is Sur Nadi. The city is surrounded by industries like Ashok Leyland, Sunflag steel and Ordnance Factory. The Wainganga is the principal river in the district, and the only stream that does not dry up in the hot weather, its affluent within the district being the Bawanthari, Bagh, Kanhan and Chulbund.

Norgyaling Tibetan Settlement, the only Tibetan community in Maharashtra, was established near Bhandaria here in 1972. About 1,000 Tibetans live in Norgyaling (also spelled Norgyeling or Norgaling).[1]

Geography

Bhandara is located at 21°10′N 79°39′E / 21.17°N 79.65°E / 21.17; 79.65.[2] It has an average elevation of 244 metres (800 feet).

Fondly called the 'District of Lakes', Bhandara is an important district of Maharashtra. It is located at 60 km from the city of Nagpur. It falls on the major Highway No 6 joining Mumbai and Kolkata. Lying in the north eastern part of the state, Bhandara has total population of 11,98,810 residing over an area of 3716.65 square meters.

Bhandara has a mixed economy with agriculture, industries and forest resources contributing to it. Bhandara is known for its large production of rice. It is also a major hub for the production of Hand Knitted Silk products which is crafted by tribe of Halba Koshti.

Climate

The weather is very extreme in all seasons with temperatures in summers as high as 45 degrees Celsius and in winters as cool as 8 degrees Celsius.

As of 2011 India census,[3] Bhandara had a population of 91,845. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. Bhandara has an average literacy rate of 80%, higher than the national average of 74.04%; with male literacy of 85% and female literacy of 75%. 11% of the population is under 6 years of age.Bhandara is surrounded with five villages on its outskirts like Ganeshpur,Bela,Bhojapur,Khokarla,Takli including which the population reaches about 1,50,000.

Ashok Leyland, manufacturer of heavy vehicles and BHEL, Sunflag Iron & Steel Company, Ordnance factory & Ellora paper Mill & Manganese Ore Mines of MOIL LIMITED (A Govt. Undertaking PSU, Under Steel Ministry of INDIA) is located here at village Chikla (Underground Mine 170 Mtrs. depth from surface ) & Village Dongri Buzurg (Opencast Mine with Electrodylitice plant) .Videocon international is also starting it consumer electronics plant near Bhandara.

Road Transportation

Bhandara falls on the National Highway 6. It is directly connected to Nagpur and Raipur by Private and Government Bus Services. It is one of division of MSRTC.It has also a very good connectivity with neighbouring Madhya Pradesh.

Rail Transportation

Bhandara Road railway station (BRD) serves Bhandara City and its outgrowth. It is directy connected to state capital Mumbai and Kolkata by Indian Railway. Bhandara is connected to both Raipur and Nagpur for rail transportation.

Air Transportation

There is no air transportation in Bhandara. The nearest airport is at Nagpur which is 60 km from Bhandara.
