Bigg Boss Kannada (ಬಿಗ್ ಬಾಸ್ ಕನ್ನಡ in Kannada, or simply 'Bigg Boss') is the Kannada version of the reality TV show Bigg Boss which is broadcast in India; currently on Viacom 18's Colors Kannada. The show is produced by Endemol, currently through Endemol Shine India[1] who owns the global format of Big Brother. Kannada actor Sudeep was roped in to host the reality show in 2013 for the first season.[2][3] Sudeep continues to be the part of the show as of fourth season in 2016.[4] The first season of the show on ETV Kannada became popular[5] and turned out to be a TRP magnet,[6] eventually became the No.1 reality show in South India.[7]
Bigg Boss Kannada moved to Star Network's Suvarna TV[8] for the second season and grew even bigger in the market.[9][10] The channel claimed an approximate increase of 25% in viewers for the season.[11] The show returned to Viacom 18[12] and was aired on Colors Kannada, re-branded from ETV Kannada for the next seasons and the third season saw a slight fall in the TRP because of a controversy involving a housemate following his immediate ejection.[13][14] A year later, during the press meet for the fourth season, it was clarified that the TRP fall was a false claim and the ratings actually went up after the ejection.[15]
The fame of the show as of fourth season reached to an extent where the film producers from the Kannada Film Industry and the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce held a protest in front of Innovative Film City in Bidadi, where the Bigg Boss house is located, demanding the actors not to participate or host reality shows on television, also tried to impose a ban on the show because of its popularity affecting the performances of movies in the box office.[16]
The 'Bigg Boss' House
A 'Bigg Boss' House is built for every season. For the first two seasons, the house was located in an undisclosed place at Lonavala, Pune district of Maharashtra. From the third season, the Kannada incarnation of Bigg Boss House is built at Innovative Film City in Bengaluru, Karnataka. The house would be usually well-furnished and decorated. It would have all the modern amenities and a large, common bedroom with beds for all contestants. There was an addition in the form of a luxurious single bedroom for the captain starting from second season. The house would also have common toiletries, swimming pool, gymnasium and spacious gardens. Apart from these, show specific activity areas and a small sound-proof room with controlled entrance called as the 'confession room' is built in the house where the housemates would be called in by the Bigg Boss for nomination process and other conversational activities.[17] A secret room with bed and other facilities was incorporated into the house starting from season 2 where an evicted contestant, if selected by the Bigg Boss to continue the game, would retained in this room for a week or two and would be put back into the game. The House has no television connection (except for the day where the show host Sudeep converses with the contestants through the TV), no telephones, no access to internet, no clocks, no articles to write, complying with the rules of Big Brother around the world.[18]
The 'Eye' Logo
Each season gets its own Bigg Boss 'Eye' logo similar to the Bigg Boss and Big Brother shows. The first season of Kannada Bigg Boss on ETV Kannada inherited its logo from the sixth season of its Hindi counterpart in the form of a human eye with an eyeball displaying the SMPTE color bars, against a purple, lightning storm background. The second season, moved to Suvarna TV and got its dedicated logo in the form of a more detailed human eye against a background which split the 'hot' (orange) and 'cold' (blue) sides of the personalities in the house. This logo also had the text 'Season 2' below the 'Eye'.
The third season returned to the original broadcaster, then re-branded as Colors Kannada and the logo was adopted from the one used for the first season. The same eye was used against a purple tornado background and there was no mention about the season number. The fourth season had a make-over with the new 'Eye' that resembles a futuristic design, with different elements inside the eye, against a background that uses many tech elements and a dominant blue color. The season number is not mentioned in the fourth logo too.
House Rules
While all the rules have never been disclosed to the audience, the most prominent ones are clearly seen. The inmates are not permitted to talk in any other language than Kannada. They are not supposed to tamper with any of the electronic equipment or any other article in the House. They cannot leave the House premises at any time except when permitted to and are prohibited to discuss their nominations with their fellow housemates.[19] They are not allowed to sleep during the day. Sometimes, the housemates may be nominated for other reasons, such as nomination by a person who has achieved special privileges (via tasks or other things), for breaking rules or other reasons. In case of serious situations, a contestant may be evicted directly, which is referred to as an 'ejection' from the house.

Controversies
In the third season of Bigg Boss Kannada, Huccha Venkat was ejected from the show for breaking the rule and assaulting fellow housemate Ravi Mooruru. The season witnessed Venkat's opposition to almost every happenings on the show. He claimed to have formed and maintained an army named 'Huccha Venkat Sene' to fight against corruption and ban item numbers in movies. Mooruru had accused Venkat's non-involvement in the house tasks a day before Sudeep's weekend episode. While answering Sudeep's question on the weekend episode, he started to speak about Venkat's claim about the 'Sene' which enraged Venkat to manhandle Mooruru. He continued to slap Ravi until he was dragged away by other housemates causing Ravi to bleed. The act caused a direct ejection for Venkat and he was escorted out of the house by bouncers. Post ejection, he made statements against Ravi, show host Sudeep, and other housemates including Rehman and Chandan. Sudeep's fans revolted against this and Venkat was made to apologize for his statements against Sudeep on live TV. The act eventually led to Venkat's arrest.
In the ongoing fourth season, Huccha Venkat was again invited to be a guest for a task. Pratham, a current contestant and Venkat have been a part of heated exchange of words previously because of Pratham's offer of a cricket bookie role for Venkat in his upcoming film. The issue was shown on news channels during the start of the season and was portrayed that the two do not like each other. During the task on the show, Pratham tried to irritate Venkat with his choice of words only to end up getting assaulted by him. Venkat was escorted out of the Bigg Boss house by the bouncers, for the second time.
