Bononia (titular see)
Bononia, once the residential episcopal see of the city of that name, is a titular see of the Catholic Church.[1]
History
The city of Bononia lay within the ancient Roman province of Dacia Ripensis. Under its present name of Vidin, it is part of Bulgaria.[2]
It was important enough to become a suffragan bishopric of the Metropolitan Archbishop of the provincial capital Raziaria. The Latin adjective by which the diocese is referred to is Bononiensis.
Titular see
The diocese was nominally restored as a Latin Catholic titular bishopric in 1933.
It has had the following incumbents, all of the lowest (episcopal) rank:
- Antoine Caillot (12 December 1961 – 24 March 1964)
- John Burke (3 August 1966 – 24 July 1970)
- José Julio Aguilar García (5 December 1970 – 2 November 1972)
- Pablo Antonio Vega Mantilla (30 January 1973 – 30 April 1991)
- James Moriarty (26 June 1991 – 4 June 2002)
- Milan Šášik, Vincentians (C.M.) (12 November 2002 – 17 March 2010)
- John J. McIntyre (8 June 2010 – ...), Auxiliary Bishop of Philadelphia (US).
