Buses in Hanoi

Buses are currently the only means of public transport in Hanoi, comprising more than 100 routes operated by the state-owned Transerco and several private companies serving the city centre and towns in greater Hanoi as well as connecting Hanoi with neighbouring provinces. Buses in Hanoi are easily recognisable with their red and yellow colours but buses on a number of routes are also painted green, blue and orange. The earliest bus leaves at 5 am while the latest bus leaves at 10:30 pm. Most Hanoi buses are equipped with an audio system to announce the next stop. LED panels are installed at a number of bus stops to display live arrivals information.

Routes

The network includes subsidized buses, non-subsidized buses, airport buses and provincial buses that connect Hanoi with neighbouring provinces.

Subsidized buses

There are nearly 100 government-subsidized bus routes in Hanoi, numbering from 01 to 88. Branch routes are usually marked by the number plus a letter, for example 06B running between Giap Bat Bus Station and Hong Van.

Routes 09 (Hoan Kiem Lakeside), 18 (National Economics University) and 23 (Nguyen Cong Tru) are loop routes.

Airport buses

In addition to two subsidized routes serving Noi Bai International Airport, 07 (Cau Giay Bus Station-Noi Bai Airport) and 17 (Long Bien Bus Interchange-Noi Bai Airport), Transerco also operates another non-subsidized route, 86, between the Hanoi Railway Station and Noi Bai Airport.

Fares

The fare for a single ride costs between VND7,000 and VND9,000 depending on the length of the route. Regular commuters can purchase a monthly pass at VND100,000 to use on a specific route or VND200,000 to use on all routes. Students, industrial zone workers and the elderly only have to pay half the price for a monthly pass.

Hanoi Transport Corporation (Transerco) is the largest bus operator in Hanoi and is made up of several affiliates.

Apps

Travellers can use a mobile app to find the bus routes between the departure and arrival points. The app is available on the web, iOS,[1] Android[2] and Windows Phone.[3] Currently the app is only available in Vietnamese.
