Christopher Bond (born Cornwall 1992) is a British composer particularly noted for his brass band compositions.
Biography
A graduate of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Christopher is Composer in Association to the number one ranked brass band in the world, Cory Band. He has received a number of brass commissions, including Owen Farr, Stephen Sykes, Zoe Hancock, Euphony Euphonium Quartet and Eminence Brass Quartet, comprising members of the Black Dyke Band, Cory Band and London Symphony Orchestra. His work has been performed at many locations in the United Kingdom, including at Wales Millennium Centre, Regent Hall, Durham International Festival of Brass, the RNCM Festival of Brass and during the BBC Welsh Proms at St David's Hall as well as radio broadcasts both locally and national on BBC Radio 2. In 2012, his work 'Islands in the Sky' was premiered at the International Tuba Euphonium Conference in Linz, Austria.
His first commission came at the age of sixteen, when he won a competition to write a fanfare for the Cornwall Youth Brass Band to open their fifty-year course anniversary concert. Since then, he has written a further work for the same band, in dedication and performed in the presence of Cornish composer, the late Goff Richards.[1]
In June 2011 Christopher won a competition held by the Fine Arts Brass Ensemble for a fanfare to open their concert in the new Dora Stoutzker Hall in Cardiff. He was also selected as a finalist in the Stainer & Bell Competition for brass in both 2011 and 2012, winning the 2012 competition and a subsequent publishing contract of his Euphonium Quartet 'Equinox' with Stainer & Bell.
Other notable works include 'Flight 93' for the Welsh Sinfonia,[2] 'Dynamite!', a cornet ensemble work commissioned by Richard Marshall for the Black Dyke Brass Arts Festival in Leeds, as well as the 'Royal Diamond Jubilee Fanfare' commissioned by the Greater Gwent Music Support Service for a performance in the presence of Queen Elizabeth II and The Duke of Edinburgh as part of the Diamond Jubilee Tour.[3]
One of his most recent projects was the soundtrack for 'Magic in the Skies', the annual summer season of firework displays held at Land's End in Cornwall, featuring the voice of Miriam Margolyes.[4]
