Cobalt International Energy, Inc. is an oil exploration and production company with oil portfolio in North America and West Africa. The North America operation is focused on the Gulf of Mexico, where it targets the horizons subsalt Miocene and inboard lower Tertiary. In West Africa, the company’s operation is located off the shores of Angola and Gabon.[3] The company has built the strategic relationship with TOTAL E&P USA, INC[1] According to the geographic factor, the company divides its business in two segments: the U.S. Gulf of Mexico and West Africa.[4]
History
In 2005, the company was founded in Houston, Texas.[1]
On August 27, 2009, the company was incorporated.[3] Later, in the same year, CEO Joseph Bryant announced an oil drilling partnership with Sonangol, Nazaki, and Alper.[5]
In 2014 a class action lawsuit in the United States alleged that Cobalt paid foreign officials to secure oil concessions, including Manuel Vicente of Sonangol and the head of Angola’s military and security intelligence department, general Manuel Helder Vieira Dias Junior.[5] If so they violated the US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act of 1977.[5]
