The DoubleTree Hotel Cleveland is a 1974-erected 172 foot 18-story high-rise Hilton hotel on Lakeside Avenue in the Nine-Twelve District of downtown Cleveland.[1] The hotel is of the modernist style and features big glass full story windows intercut by heavy ribbons of metal. It was the vision of the William W. Bond Jr. & Associates of Memphis, Tennessee and is one of only six projects by the group that still is standing.[2] It sits at the intersection of Lakeside and East 12th Street.

Rebirth

The DoubleTree Cleveland is operated by Hilton following the structure's 2009 renovation and features such amenities as free WiFi, shuttle service and meeting space.[3] The location of the hotel sits on a bluff that overlooks the Port of Cleveland, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, the North Coast Harbor, the Great Lakes Science Center and Lake Erie. It is one of five Hilton-family hotels in downtown Cleveland, the other four being the Hilton Cleveland Downtown Hotel, Hilton Garden Inn (Cleveland), Reserve Square and the Hampton Inn (Cleveland).

In the News

In early 2015, the Cleveland Division of Police responded to a call that a Cleveland man had barricaded himself in his room on the 11th floor of the hotel.[4] It is not known why the man barricaded himself in the room, but mental health issues were suspected. The incident is significant because police evacuated the whole 11th floor and the hotel remained in full operation while the police handled the situation.[5] The crisis was eventually defused but is notable as the Cleveland SWAT team and K-9 unit were called out as the man was said to have a gun, but never used it.[6]
