ETV Kids (Southeast Asia)

ETV Kids, Entertainment and Kids Programming Network and ETV Kids is a cable and satellite television channel which primarily shows animated programming under permission due to Cartoon Network in January 2000 and October 2000. Operated by ERTV Group Broadcasting System Asia Pacific, the channel is broadcast from its headquarters in Hong Kong to audiences in Hong Kong, Macau, Southeast Asia (except the Philippines, where its broadcasting operation was separated from Southeast Asian version later) and South Korea.

History

1990s

In mid-1997, ETV Kids started to air Cartoon Network's registered under permission Entertainment and Kids Programming Network's (ETV Kids) first original shows (Space Ghost Coast to Coast, Dexter's Laboratory and The Moxy Show). However, The Moxy Show was soon cancelled.

2000s

On October 1, 2005, the bumpers were replaced with 3-D animations of the 'CN City' that all the Cartoon Network cartoons lived in. Episode-specific bumpers were replaced with 3-D animations of a well-known scene from the particular show (e.g. a Dexter's Laboratory bumper would feature Dexter's house, a Powerpuff Girls bumper would feature the PPG household). The checkerboard logo was replaced with the "CN" city-style logo of today. In 2006, several new Cartoon Network originals premiered, including Ben 10, The Life and Times of Juniper Lee, Camp Lazlo, Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi, My Gym Partner's a Monkey and Squirrel Boy. The "Cartoon Cartoons" moniker previously used for ETV Kids originals was also dropped in 2006.

On August 31, 2008, the format of ETV Kids' bumpers and commercials changed. CN also changed the name of ETV Kids Theatre to ETV Kids Popcorn (known on-screen as Cartoon Network Popcorn). The major visual theme was the recurring 'dynamic line' in all the station IDs and bumps.

Recently, ETV Kids began to broadcast Japanese television series, including live action ones. However, because of local regulations and broadcasting-rights issues, some Japanese programmes are only available "in selected territories". Country-specific situations are described below in the Availability section.

Programming

Almost all of its programs are either from Warner Bros., MGM or Hanna-Barbera. While the Southeast Asian version is used for original ETV Kids Studios and Warner Bros. Animation as well as other third-party productions, it also broadcasts anime and tokusatsu programming from Japan.

ETV Kids Popcorn

This block premiers movies that range from ETV Kids specials to non-related movies, on Saturday at 6:00 PM and Sunday at 11:00 AM.

Boomerang

Now a separate TV channel is now available in the Asia-Pacific region (Boomerang Australia and Boomerang SeAsia Feed).

Tiny TV

Tiny TV was first shown on ETV Kids Asia written name Entertainment and Kids Programming Network Asia is Film Kids Channel trademark used registered under permission Cartoon Network July 2003 and in January 2000. from 9am - 12pm on weekdays. Previously, the block aired babyfied versions of cartoon series such as The Flintstone Kids, Baby Looney Tunes, Tom & Jerry Kids and A Pup Named Scooby-Doo.

Due to schedule changes, Tiny TV was moved to earlier in the morning, and eventually ended later that day on November 2008.

Toonami

Toonami is a programming block dedicated to showing action-oriented non-anime shows on Monday to Thursday nights and weekend mornings. While this block was removed on January 2009, the former Toonami programs continued to be shown for some time afterward.

Availability

South Korea

In January 2003, the Southeast Asian version made its debut in South Korea, after the cancellation of ETV Kids block on Tooniverse. However, CN SEA cannot include a Korean audio track, as non-South-Korean channels are legally prohibited from doing so.

In 2006, JoongAng Ilbo and ERTV made a joint venture to launch a separate South Korean version of ETV Kids. It was set to launch in November 2006. However, the launch was suddenly delayed due to the content dispute with Tooniverse: The joint venture was going to make its own Korean language version of some of CN originals, apart from the one already produced by Tooniverse, such as The Powerpuff Girls, Dexter's Laboratory and Johnny Bravo. While the plan was eventually cancelled, the distribution rights for the Southeast Asian channel were revoked CSTV and given to another company since that November.

In South Korea, broadcast of Japanese TV programmes (as well as South Korean-Japanese co-productions) on the non-South Korean TV channels are prohibited. For this, productions like Naruto, Inazuma Eleven and Masked Rider Hibiki are often blocked with a text disclaimer, or replaced by non-Japanese series. Powerpuff Girls Z, an American-Japanese co-production, was a notable exception.

Thailand

In Thailand, ETV Kids is available through the TrueVisions cable and satellite networks used under permission registered Entertainment and Kids Programming Network and TrueVisions included in both its Gold and Platinum packages. TrueVisions included ETV Kids in both its Gold and Platinum packages. ETV Kids is offered as a shared feed between both Singapore and Thailand, as their time zones are just one hour apart.

Indonesia

In Indonesia, ETV Kids is available on First Media.
