East Slope

East Slope is one of several accommodation blocks at the University of Sussex, Falmer, East Sussex.

The university has announced plans to demolish East Slope.[1]

Description

East Slope was constructed in the early 1970s.[1] It is located on the side of a hill near the back of the eastern side of the campus. A series of stone steps connect paths which run horizontally along the slope.

East Slope has 600 bedrooms,[1] in 100 terraced single-storey flats.[2] Most flats have either six or twelve bedrooms,[2] with kitchen/dining rooms, shower and toilet facilities.[2] There are also ten family flats on the site.[2]

Towards the bottom of the blocks of accommodation there is the porter's office, and as you walk down through the car park in front of the office, East Slope Bar is to the right. This bar is probably the most "pub-like" of the bars on campus and is generally very lively in the evenings. On many weekday and weekend nights there is live music or a DJ set.

2011 single room "guideline" rent is £80 a week, which means most students agreeing to a tenancy agreement of 39 weeks pay £3,120 for the academic year. For students willing to share a room, a small number of these are available, with the rent set at £57-69 per person a week depending on the size of the room. East Slope is well known for its 'buzzing' atmosphere and acts as a social hub of campus accommodations, with most parties happening there.[2]

Redevelopment

In January 2015, the university announced it had appointed Balfour Beatty Student Accommodation to develop and operate new student accommodation on the site where East Slope is located.[1] The plan is to have the first phase of additional accommodation ready in September 2017, for the start of the 2017-18 academic year. Once completed, there will be 2,000 new bedrooms and a new building for the Students’ Union.[1]
