He was honored with the award on 8 June 1865.[2][3][4][5]

Biography

Bras was born on 6 October 1841 in Jefferson County, Iowa.[3] He enlisted at Louisa County, Iowa into the 8th Iowa Infantry.[2] On 8 April 1865, during the Battle of Spanish Fort, one of the efforts by Union forces to capture the forts protecting the city of Mobile, Alabama, Bras charged through the Confederate camp, capturing a flag from a color-bearer. It is for this act of bravery that he was awarded the Medal of Honor.[1][6]

Following the Civil War, Bras pursued farming, dwelling in several states, including Florida. His wife, Mary E. Bras, died a few years before him. Bras died on 24 June 1923 and his remains are interred at the Evergreen Cemetery in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.[4][5]
