Early years and family life

Erol Kahraman's Turkish Cypriot parents were forced to flee their country during the period of political violence in the early 1970s. They moved to the United Kingdom as a safe haven, where Erol Kahraman was born in London on January 2, 1983. In his early years, he developed an affection for football in North London.

As he was ten years old, the family immigrated to Canada to start a new life. There, Kahraman began with ice hockey playing.[1][2] In 2010, he returned to Northern Cyprus to settle in Famagusta, where his family has a house.[1][2] Currently, he resides there with his wife.[3] Kahraman has a second citizenship from Canada.[4]

Playing career

Because he keeps performing ice hockey and football at the same time, he has to travel several times a week between his home in Northern Cyprus and Turkey. His both duties prevent him though sometimes from taking part in preparation camps for international matches as he states.[1][2]

Club

Ice hockey

Shortly after arriving in Elmira, Ontario in Canada, Erol Kahraman joined the local junior ice hockey team Elmira Sugar Kings. In 2001, he enjoyed his first success winning the Sutherland Cup trophy in the Greater Ontario Junior Hockey League. Between 2008 and 2010, he continued to play in the WOAA Senior AA Hockey League for Lucknow Lancers as a semi-professional until he returned to his homeland.[2][3][4]

In Turkey, Kahraman joined first Ankara University's ice hockey team, aka Ankara Panthers,[5] and then moved to play two years for another Ankara-based club, the Başkent Yıldızları, with which he was twice Turkish Ice Hockey Super League (TBHSL) champion in the 2011–12 and 2012–13 seasons.[1][2] He was named Best Goalkeeper in the 2010–11 and 2012–13 seasona.[4][6][7][8] Currently, Kahraman is part of Zeytinburnu Belediyespor in Istanbul, which was promoted to the Super League (TBHSL) in the 2013–14 season, and became runner-up in their first season.[4][8][9]

Kahraman participated twice at the IIHF Continental Cup, the first time in 2010 with Ankara University,[10] and then in 2011 with Başkent Yıldızları.[11]

Football

While he was performing ice hockey in Canada, Kahraman played also football as a goaltender. After returning to Northern Cyprus, he joined the Cyprus Turkish Birinci Lig (First League) football team of Mağusa Türk Gücü S.K. in his hometown Famagusta from September 2012 on before he transferred to the İkinci Lig (Second League) team of Mehmetçik TÇB in January 2014.[12]

International

The Turkish national ice hockey team coach Tarık Göçmen met Kahraman in Canada and offered him a place in the national team squad.[1][2] After almost twenty years in Canada, he accepted the invitation of Tarık Göçmen.[13]

As a student at the Eastern Mediterranean University of Northern Cyprus,[5] he represented Turkey at the 2011 Winter Universiade in Erzurum, Turkey.[2][13][14] Kahraman played in all five matches of the 2013 IIHF World Championship Division II B Tournament held in İzmit, Turkey.[1][15] He took part in the 2014 IIHF World Championship Division II B Tournament in Jaca, Spain.[9] Kahraman was awarded Best Goaltender title at the 2016 IIHF World Championship Division III tournament.

During his time in Canada, Kahraman served over a decade as an ice hockey coach.[2] In the 2011–12 TBHSL season at Başkent Yıldızları, he acted as a goaltending coach.[4]
