The Cumberland flag at Beacon Edge, Penrith
The Cumberland flag is the flag of the historic county of Cumberland. It was registered with the Flag Institute on 13 December 2012,[1] 38 years after the territorial division it represents became part of the larger county of Cumbria.[2]
Design
The flag is based on the pattern of the arms of the former Cumberland County Council, originally granted by the College of Arms on 19 September 1950,[3] namely:
Per fesse vert and barry wavy of six Argent and Azure in chief three Parnassus Flowers proper.
The Parnassus flower is a wildflower of the marshy uplands[3] and which has been chosen as the county flower of Cumberland, growing here on a green field. The wavy blue and white stripes in base are for the coastline and the famed lakes of the county.[4][5]

The Local Government Act of 1972 created the new county of Cumbria consisting of the former counties of Cumberland and Westmorland and parts of Lancashire and the West Riding of Yorkshire.
