Foyer (housing model)

The Foyer housing model originated in France during World War One to provide a place to eat and sleep for soldiers. After the war, foyers were used to provide accommodation for a movement of people across the country whop were seeking work. It is thought that the service reduced the number of homeless unemployed youth.[1] The term “foyer” means hearth in French. The foyer as a model to combat homelessness was developed in the UK in the 1990s.[2]

The foyer today is primarily aimed to assist young people who are making the transition to adulthood and independence. The transitional housing model is aimed especially for those leaving foster care.[3]
