George Selvie (born March 6, 1987) is an American football defensive end who is currently a free agent. He played college football for the University of South Florida, and received consensus All-American honors. He was drafted by the St. Louis Rams in the seventh round of the 2010 NFL Draft, and he has also played for the Carolina Panthers, Jacksonville Jaguars and Dallas Cowboys.

Early years

Selvie attended Pine Forest High School in Pensacola, Florida, where he was Class 3A second-team all-state selection. He totaled 55 tackles with six sacks. Selvie played both on the offensive and defensive line and was originally recruited to play center at South Florida. Considered only a two-star recruit by Rivals.com, Selvie was not ranked nationally.[1]

College career

Selvie attended the University of South Florida, where he played for the South Florida Bulls football team from 2006 to 2009. He holds the Big East Conference record for tackles for a loss in a season. He also holds the USF records for career sacks, sacks in a season, and tackles for a loss in a season (set in 2007).

In 2006 Selvie played as a freshman and totaled 64 tackles, 14.5 for a loss, including 5.5 sacks. He also forced 4 fumbles and recovered 2, had 9 hurries and batted one pass away.[2] He was the National Defensive Player of the Week, November 25, 2006, in a win over West Virginia. For his efforts, Sporting News named him to its Freshman All-America team.

In 2007, Selvie was selected as a consensus All-American and was voted the Big East Defensive Player of the Year. That season he had 14.5 sacks (2nd in NCAA) and an NCAA-leading 31.5 tackles for loss. He totaled 59 tackles, 3 forced fumbles, 13 quarterback hurries, and a blocked kick.[3] He played in the Sun Bowl, in El Paso, Texas, December 31, 2007.

As a junior, in 2008, Selvie recorded 43 tackles (32 solo) with 13.5 of them for losses (including 5.5 sacks). He also broke up 5 passes and forced a fumble.[4] Became the first two-time, first team All-American in USF history when he was selected by the American Football Coaches Association (He was also a second-team All-American according to the Walter Camp Foundation).

In 2009, his senior season, Selvie had 40 tackles (9.5 for losses) and 3.5 sacks. He forced and recovered one fumble and broke up two passes.[5] while making First-team All-Big East by Phil Steele.

While Selvie was a student at University of South Florida, he was initiated as a member of Phi Beta Sigma fraternity.

Selvie had "been labeled as a first-round talent with sixth- or seventh-round production." After his consensus All-America year in 2007, his production "tailed off considerably" in 2008 and 2009.[7]

St. Louis Rams

Selvie was selected by the St. Louis Rams in the seventh round of the 2010 NFL Draft. In 2010, he played all 16 games and finished with 21 tackles and 1.5 sacks. On September 3, 2011, he was waived.

Carolina Panthers

He was claimed off waivers by the Carolina Panthers on September 4, but was waived on October 5, after playing four games and recording two tackles.

Jacksonville Jaguars

Selvie was signed by the Jacksonville Jaguars on November 15, 2011 where he finished the season playing in 7 games and making four tackles and one-half sack. He played in 9 games in 2012 before being released.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

He signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on April 2, 2013.[8] He was released on May 6.

Dallas Cowboys

Selvie signed with the Dallas Cowboys for depth purposes on July 24, 2013, because Anthony Spencer was having problems with his left knee and backup Tyrone Crawford was lost for the year with an Achilles injury.[9] Although he was not expected to make the team, he earned first-team practice reps in his first two weeks and was named the starter at strong defensive end for the Hall of Fame Game against the Miami Dolphins, where he had a notable performance with 2 sacks in a 24-20 win.

He would keep surpassing expectations and on September 8, made his first NFL start. During the season he had several noteworthy performances, earning the nickname "Bricklayer" from defensive line coach Rod Marinelli. He started all 16 games and was a key player on a defensive line that experienced many injuries. He finished the year with 39 tackles, 7 sacks (second on the team), 7 tackles for loss, 22 quarterback pressures, 2 pass deflections, one forced fumble and a fumble recovery.[10]

In 2014, his numbers were down from his breakout season, starting 13 games at left defensive end, while recording 31 tackles, 20 quarterback pressures, 3 sacks, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.[11]

New York Giants

The New York Giants signed Selvie to a one-year contract on March 20, 2015.[12] Although he was expected to be a reserve player and a situational pass rusher, injuries on the defensive line opened the door for him to start 3 contests, before various injuries forced him to miss 4 games. He finished with 15 tackles, one sack and one fumble recovery.
