Go-Jos
Go-Jos were a British TV dance troupe, who appeared regularly on the BBC 1 TV music chart show Top of the Pops following its launch in 1964 until Pan's People replaced them in May 1968.
The troupe were formed by Jo Cook, who had been a member of the ‘Beat Girls’, who appeared in a weekly pop show on BBC 2 called The Beat Room and Gadooks! It's The In-Crowd and its successor Gadzooks both hosted by Lulu. As The Go-Jos, they worked with Lulu again in 1967 on the music and comedy series Three of a Kind, which also featured Mike Yarwood. Initially, when artists were not available to perform their number one hits on Top of the Pops, the camera panned to audience members dancing, but the producer then decided it was necessary to feature professional dancers and recruited the Go-Jos.
Initially, Linda Hotchkin and Jane Bartlett were the two other members of the three girl troupe. They were named 'Jos' after Jo Cook' but she left to concentrate on choreography, and the troupe expanded to six with the addition of Lesley Larbey, Wendy Hilhouse, Barbara von der Heyde and Thelma Bignell. They usually danced on Top of the Pops to the latest pop hits dressed in the mini skirts and high boots that were fashionable at the time.[1]
