Gordon Johnson (historian)

Dr Gordon Johnson (born 13 September 1943) is a British historian of colonial India. He is the general editor of the New Cambridge History of India, and was the President of Wolfson College, Cambridge from 1993 to 2010. He is the current President of the Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland.
Johnson was born on 13 September 1943. From 1974 he was Lecturer in Oriental Studies, University of Cambridge, and from 1983 Director, Cambridge University Centre of South Asian Studies.
He has been a Deputy Vice-Chancellor since 2002. He served as the first Provost of the Gates Cambridge Scholarship Trust from 2000–10, and chairs the Syndicate governing Cambridge University Press.
