Gregory Peck "Greg" Hyder (born June 21, 1948) is a former professional basketball player. He grew up in Victorville, California, and with his brother, Jerry, attended Victor Valley High School, where they excelled under future SCIBCA Hall of Fame coach, Ollie Butler.[1] Greg was a Second Team All-Southern California "AA" Basketball selection in 1966.[2]

College career

After graduating from High School, he attended Eastern New Mexico University from 1966 to 1970. His brother, Jerry Hyder, followed and attended Eastern New Mexico University from 1967 to 1971. Together, in 1969, they led the Greyhounds to a 23-7 record and the school's only NAIA Basketball Championships.[3][4] The following year, during the 1970 NAIA Tournament, Greg was the leading rebounder throughout the tournament with 65 rebounds through 5 games and was named the Chuck Taylor Most Valuable Player.[5] He was a four-time NAIA All American[6] and earned first team selection for the 1970 season.[7] The Greyhounds finished Third in the 1970 NAIA Basketball Championships. Upon graduation in 1970, he set numerous school records for basketball, including being the school's all-time leading scorer and rebounder.

Greg was inducted into the Eastern New Mexico University Athletic Hall of Fame in 1984.[8]

His brother, Jerry Hyder, finished his college career at Eastern New Mexico University as the 7th leading scorer in school's history with 1,316 points and currently stands 10th all time. The 1969 Championship team also fielded Jim Guymon (1967–1971), who graduated as the 5th all time scorer in school's history with 1,530 and currently ranks 7th.[9]

NBA career

Following his senior season in 1970, Greg was drafted by the Cincinnati Royals of the NBA in the third round and played one season.[10]

Brother Jerry was drafted by the Denver Rockets of the ABA in 1971. He never played professional basketball in the ABA or the NBA[11] and Jim Guymon played professionally in the United Kingdom.[12]
