GuHu Media

The GuHu Media Society is a student run organization based out of the University of Guelph-Humber. The organization offers opportunities outside classes and internships for students to create their own content. Each division will work on dedicated projects, but also those that encourage collaboration across media.[1] GuHu Media's main objective is "to develop practical media skills in all areas through workshops, tutorials, events and projects."[2] The society is divided into three specialized fields (or divisions) within the span of media. The divisions are radio, television and public relations/digital arts.

Background

"GuHu" is an acronym for Guelph-Humber. GuHu Media was started in January, 2010. It originally covered four divisions (radio, television, public relations and digital arts) but was compressed to three at the beginning of fall semester of 2012. The groups enable individuals to gain knowledge and practical experience in their desired area of emphasis while creating professional relationships.[3]

Radio

Through GuHu Radio, students learn a number of skills to succeed in the industry.[4] The application process for GuHu Radio Division is straightforward. The process involves creating an idea for a show, writing a script and pitching an idea to the radio division head. The general idea behind the radio show creating process is to teach members how to prepare a show every week, similar to what a mainstream radio show goes through. This includes making and editing show scripts. GuHu Radio allows students the ability to choose the format and style of the show that they have in mind. Students who host a radio show are given the freedom to choose their own music.[5]

Television

GuHu Media Society’s Television division was formed to give students in all years use of the broadcast studio.[6] GuHu TV produces their own shows with all state of the art equipment right within the school. There are numerous positions within GuHu Television division:

Training on equipment and job tasks are all provided by the Division head and the PAs. In the winter semester of 2012, Television division created their own series called Original Talk (OGT). Original Talk is a weekly human interest show consisting of Hosts and On-Air Correspondents bringing the viewers interviews and discussing topics of importance to university students.

Public Relations/Digital Arts

Public Relations

The public relations division of GuHu media sets its goals in correlation to the other divisions with GuHu Media. Public Relations seeks to forge important relationships between The University of Guelph-Humber student body and the media industry at large.[7] Projects within Public Relations include work for the university, charitable initiatives, community outreach, media relations, and program planning which are all coordinated with strategic and creative considerations to best reach their audience.[8] Different positions within the Public Relations division include, but are not limited to the division head, a communications appointed member, an event management appointed member, and an administrative management appointed member.

Digital Arts

Digital Arts (DA) is a mixture of Digital Communications and Image Arts, two key fields in the span of media. Members of the DA division do a lot of digital design work, filming and photography.[9] In the past, Digital Arts has worked closely with the Public Relations division to promote work from the Television and Radio divisions respectively. As well, the GuHu media website is run by Digital Arts students. At the beginning of the 2012 fall semester, Digital Arts created a collaboration with Public Relations to form one division tasked with all promotional jobs and assignments.
