Hirakud is a small township located in Sambalpur in Odisha. It was a Notified Area which finally included along with Burla in Sambalpur city to obtain the Corporation tag. It was earlier a village which came to the industrial limelight in 1956 when Hirakud Dam was built and thereby clearing the path for industrial growth in this earlier known rustic small township. Presently, this town is known for being industrialized with a few of the largest companies, to cite as example is the HINDALCO. Hirakud Dam, with its potential for irrigation and production of hydroelectric power, has also been able to attract tourists for it being the largest manmade artificial lake in Asia and one of the longest and largest dams in the world. It has been constructed on the Mahanadi river between the Gandhi Minar in North and the Nehru Minar in the South which connects these two well known hills. The shoreline spans around 640 km.At the base of Hirakud Dam Burla power house present with generating capacity 290MW.
DEMOGRAPHY
Hirakud is a Notified Area Committee city in district of Sambalpur, Orissa. The Hirakud city is divided into 17 wards for which elections are held every 5 years. The Hirakud Notified Area Committee has population of 30,207 of which 15,698 are males while 14,509 are females as per report released by Census India 2011.
Population of Children with age of 0-6 is 3513 which is 11.63 % of total population of Hirakud (NAC). In Hirakud Notified Area Committee, Female Sex Ratio is of 924 against state average of 979. Moreover Child Sex Ratio in Hirakud is around 903 compared to Orissa state average of 941. Literacy rate of Hirakud city is 84.00 % higher than state average of 72.87 %. In Hirakud, Male literacy is around 90.39 % while female literacy rate is 77.11 %.
Hirakud Notified Area Committee has total administration over 6,963 houses to which it supplies basic amenities like water and sewerage. It is also authorize to build roads within Notified Area Committee limits and impose taxes on properties coming under its jurisdiction. [1]
HINDALCO INDUSTRIES LTD
The Hirakud smelter and power complex is in Odisha, about 320km by road from the capital city of Bhubaneswar. The Hirakud smelter, set up by Indal in 1959, was the country’s second aluminium smelter operating on grid power sourced from the hydro power station of the Hirakud Dam. After facing severe power scarcity, Hirakud’s captive coal-based power plant came up in 1993. It was the first in India to adopt clean coal combustion technology that uses a circulating fluidised bed, which is considered environmentally friendly. The metal from this facility is processed to produce FRP. The Hirakud FRP project is the first of its kind in India. This project, which involved relocation of some equipments from a closed facility of Novelis, will be the first and the only facility that will have the capability to produce can body stock in India. This facility will take Hindalco’s FRP play on a higher plateau in terms of capability and profitability in the coming years. It is expected to create a formidable combination of Novelis’ technology and Indian cost advantages sourcing metal from Hirakud smelter. The capacity of this facility is 135KTPA and it has started production. As an active community player it focuses its CSR initiatives towards health care, education, women’s empowerment and sustainable livelihood programmes. [2]
TRANSPORTATION
Hirakud Railway Station is located nearby across the river Mahanadi. Now being a part of Sambalpur, City Buses provide service to Nehru Park. National Highway 6 is also nearby Hirakud.
