Institute of Hotel Management Catering Technology & Applied Nutrition, Kolkata, West Bengal, generally known as IHM Kolkata, is an hospitality educational institute in India. IHM Kolkata is situated in Taratala, Kolkata. IHM Kolkata is known to be one of the top hotel management institute in the country. The Institute is governed by the National Council for Hotel Management & Catering Technology set up by the Ministry of Tourism, Govt. of India.

Students can secure admission in IHM Kolkata on the basis of their score/rank in NCHMCT JEE.

History

IHM, Kolkata was founded way back in 1963 with its temporary campus located at 21, Convent Road. The founder principal was Mr. P. A. Koshy: It started with a total number of 16 students only: Gradually it gained in popularity and the number of students also grew in leaps and bounds. In the year 1980 the institute was shifted to the new building with a campus at P-16, Taratala Road which is the present address. Within the campus, quarters for principal, faculty and staff are located along with separate hostels for boys and girls. Both the hostels have been extended recently. At present IHM, Kolkata is doing a great job by producing a large number of professionals every year. Apart from producing professionals there are activities, which are regularly held like Gourmet Nite (Food Festival), Blood Donation Camps, Annual Sports Meet etc.

Courses

Admissions

Students are offered admission in hotel management courses offered at IHM Kolkata on the basis of their score/rank in National Council of Hotel Management and Catering Technology Joint Entrance Examination (NCHMCT JEE).

The entrance exam is conducted at the national level and is one of the most popular hotel management entrance exams conducted in India.

The test paper consists of questions from subjects such as: Numerical Ability and Analytical Aptitude, Reasoning and Logical Deductions, English, General Knowledge and Current Events.

Industrial Training

The students in various courses have to undergo industrial training of different durations (e.g. 17 weeks for Bsc HHA) at any recognised hotel, as a part of their program.

Infrastructure

IHM Kolkata has several Training kitchens, bakery Lab, a training restaurant, housekeeping and front office labs and classrooms for teaching theory and practical subjects at various semesters.

There is a library with more than 5000 books and reading materials. Other facilities include an auditorium and conference rooms.

Rankings & Awards

The Institute has been awarded National Award for Excellence, Instituted by Ministry of Tourism & NCHMCT for Best Performance in Placement 2012-13 (2nd year in row).

The Institute has been awarded Special Award (runners) in National Award for Excellence, Instituted by Ministry of Tourism & NCHMCT for Performance in Academic 2012-13.

Vegetarian Option

In 2016, IHM Ahmedabad, IHM Bhopal and IHM Jaipur started giving a student the option to choose only vegetarian cooking. Earlier, it was compulsory for all IHM students to learn non-vegetarian cooking. This decision to offer a vegetarian option by IHMCTANs may be the first amongst any of the hospitality training institutes of the world. It is expected that all IHMCTANs, including IHMCTAN Kolkata, will start offering a vegetarian cooking option from academic year 2017 onwards.[1][2]
