IIT Schools of Management
The IIT Schools of Management (IIT SoMs) are the management schools/departments of the Indian Institutes of Technology, located in the cities of Kharagpur, Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kanpur and Roorkee. They award post-graduate degrees in Management. Until 2011 admission was based on the Joint Management Entrance Test (JMET) conducted by the IITs and Indian Institute of Science in rotation. Each institute then conducts group discussions and personal interviews to evaluate the students shortlisted after the test. Since 2011 JMET was replaced with Common Admission Test (CAT).[1]
DOMS, IIT Madras
The Department of Management Studies at IIT Madras formally came into existence in April 2004, through a full-fledged two-year MBA programme. The program was being offered since 2001 under the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS). However, management education in the form of M. Tech. in Industrial Management was being offered for nearly four decades prior the beginning of the MBA program in IIT Madras.
Currently, the Department of Management Studies offers MBA, MS (by research), MS (by entrepreneurship)[2] and Ph.D. degrees in various functional areas and specialized domains of the industry. It also offers a yearlong Post Graduate Programme for Executives For Visionary Leadership in Manufacturing (PGPEX-VLM) in collaboration with IIT Kanpur & IIM Calcutta.
It is one of the management department in India which gives high importance to research. In research it is ranked as top public B-school in India.[3] Research at DoMS IIT Madras has won several international awards.[4]
HSS, IIT Kharagpur
The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) started with the very inception of IIT Kharagpur in 1951. The department has been offering an M.Tech course in Human Resource Management since 1982. With the objective to meet the demands of contemporary business, it restructured the course and has been offering it as Master of Human Resource Management(MHRM) since July 2010
VGSoM, IIT Kharagpur
The Vinod Gupta School of Management at IIT Kharagpur was established in 1993, and was the first management school to be set up within the IIT system. It was initiated by a distinguished alumnus and a Life Time Fellow of the Institute, Mr. Vinod Gupta. The foundation stone of the School was laid by the then President of India, late Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma in July 1994, and the School moved to its new building in December 1996.
SJMSoM, IIT Bombay
The Shailesh J. Mehta School of Management (SJMSoM) is a management school in IIT Bombay established in 1995. In the year 2000, the school was renamed as Shailesh J Mehta School of Management.
The School enjoys the support of a number of industries and organizations including Ministry of Human Resource and Development (Government of India), ICICI, Hindustan Lever Ltd, Hindi Vidya Bhavan and Larsen & Toubro Ltd. Hindustan Lever Limited, Hindi Vidya Bhavan and ICICI also provide a number of scholarships to students for excellence in academics every year. Apart from this there are a few merit-based scholarships from the Shailesh J Mehta Endowment Fund.
DMS, IIT Delhi
The Department of Management Studies in IIT Delhi is a management school located in the institute's premises.
In 1993 the Department was brought into existence by amendment to IIT Delhi statutes. The Department responded to the need of the Indian Industry and derived satisfaction from its heavy field orientation in all its curriculum activity. In response to the feedback from the students, alumni and industry, the Department of Management Studies launched MBA programmes in 1997.
The department currently runs a two-year full-time MBA programme with focus on Management Systems, a two-year full-time MBA with focus on Telecommunication Systems Management under the aegis of Bharti School of Telecom Technology and Management and a three-year part-time MBA programme with focus on Technology Management.
DIME, IIT Kanpur
Set up in 1974, the Department of Industrial and Management Engineering (IME) at IIT Kanpur was one of the first in the country to recognize the strength of combining the training of engineers with management. Today this Department is engaged in a diverse set of activities including teaching, industry consultancy, management development programs, academic research and public sector projects. The department currently offers MBA degree encompassing different specialisations like Finance, Marketing, Operations, IT & Systems.
DoMS, IIT Roorkee
Being a part of the oldest engineering institute of the country, the Department of Management Studies came into existence in 1998.
Earlier considering Operations management as it flagship programme, the Department at present offers Dual specialization in five areas namely:- Marketing, Finance, Operations, Human Resources and Information Technology.
The MBA programme is spread over four semesters spanning two academic years. The first year, consisting of 20 compulsory courses, creates an orientation of the academic facet of management sciences and aims at establishing a strong conceptual foundation. It also introduces the contemporary techniques that form the toolbox in the study of management. The second year provides a comprehensive exposure to various functional areas of management in line with the overall career strategies of the students.
DoMS, IIT(ISM) Dhanbad
Being a part of one of the oldest engineering institute of the country, the Department of Management Studies came into existence very early.
The Department of Management Studies that began as Department of Industrial Engineering and Management is now among the leading B- Schools offering three post graduate degree programmes namely MBA, M Tech (IE&M) and Executive MBA. In addition the department offers PhD (full time and part time) apart from carrying out R&D and consultancy assignments for various national and international clients in both government and private sector.
DoMS, IISc Bangalore
The Department of Management Studies, Indian Institute of Science, established in 1948, is one of the oldest management schools in the country. The Department offers an M.Mgt programme exclusively for engineering graduates. It has a very strong research programme leading to M.Sc.(Engg.) and Ph.D. degrees in management for full-time students, to teachers from engineering colleges under Quality Improvement Programme (QIP), and to practicing professionals from industry on part-time basis through External Registration Programme (ERP).
It is no longer offering MBA programmes. However, The Department offers a Master of management (M.Mgt) programme exclusively for engineering graduates. This program is different from most other MBA programs as it offers specialisation in Business Analytics and Technology Management.
This department was the first in India to start a two-year full time program with focus on Business Analytics and Technology Management.
Business Analytics deals with data driven decision making with the help of analytical frameworks hinged on statistical techniques and data mining algorithms.
Students specializing in BA imbibe the nuances of these analytical techniques along with the acumen of managerial decision making, making them an invaluable asset in any organization. The quantitative bent of the programme supplements the domain knowledge in the various facets of management to give the students a head start in their managerial career.
Technology Management- Technology Management is integrated planning, design, optimization, operation and control of technological products, processes and services.
The TM course creates specialized managers for technology intensive firms with skills attuned to solving problems which requiretechnological inclination along with application of management concepts. Students specializing in TM understand value of technology and analyze its impact of technology in a multitude of disciplines like Marketing, Finance, Project Management, New Product Development, R&D Management, Intellectual Property and Innovation Management.
