John Bonham-Carter DL JP (1788–1838) was a British politician and barrister.
The son of Sir John Carter (before December 20, 1741 – May 18, 1808, Mayor of Portsmouth, and son of John Carter, who was a merchant), he changed his name to Bonham-Carter in 1827[1] to inherit his cousin's estates.[2] Bonham-Carter was a Justice of Peace and Deputy Lieutenant. He was High Sheriff of Hampshire in 1829 and Whig Member of Parliament (MP) for Portsmouth from 1816 to 1838.
On 25 December 1816, he married Joanna Maria Smith, daughter of William Smith. They had several children and founded a dynasty still alive in Britain, see Bonham Carter family.
