K11 is a shopping mall in Hong Kong located in The Masterpiece, developed by New World Development and completed in December 2009. The building features a 340,000-square-foot, 7-storey shopping centre beneath the Hyatt Regency Hong Kong, Tsim Sha Tsui. New World Development claims that it is "The World's First Art Mall".[1]

The name of K11 and construction

New World Development Executive Director Cheng Chi-Kong, Adrian says the name of the mall originated during a plane trip from Beijing back to Hong Kong, when he thought about the naming of the mall and his childhood memories. Since childhood, Cheng Chi-Kong, Adrian. had always dreamed of having his own kingdom. Since "K" is the 11th letter of the alphabet, he named the shopping mall "K11". He hopes his "shopping mall kingdom" will leave a deep impression on many people.[2]

Another origin of the name "K11" is the development coding of the address. Under The Land Development Corporation (predecessor to The Urban Renewal Authority), Hanoi Road, No. 18 was the 11th item in the Kowloon Area, with the code "K11".[3]

The K11 Shopping Centre has 7 storeys (2 storeys underground, 5 storeys above ground). The B1 and B2 storeys were opened on 27 November 2009, and the rest of the mall was opened on 5 December. Many stores had opened for business by the end of November. As of December 2009, K11 has leased 80 percent, of which 65% are the first flagship stores in Hong Kong. Retail and restaurants accounted for 80% and 20% of the stores, respectively.

B2 is mainly women's fashion, shoes and cosmetics, with shops such as D-mop zone, Mousse, ISCOV, JILL SCOTT, Mirabell, and Milan. B1 is mainly daily necessities, including La Creation de Gute bakery, LensCrafters, AV Life, Dymocks bookstore, I Love Kitchen, Manning, and the 18,000 sq ft (1,700 m2). Market Place by Jasons supermarket.

The ground floor has many high-end stores, including Longchamp, Tiffany by Soloman, Thann, Omega, the Italian brand Dormeuil, Y-3, D-mop, and the over-5,000-foot, world's first Chow Tai Fook concept store. In the center is a large plaza, called "The Piazza", that features a glass ceiling and a large LED screen.

L1-3 has many boutiques, including AIGLE, Laosmiddle, Levi's, Clarks, Fila, and mademoiselle. The mall also caters Mainland customers, with several Mainland brand-name specialty stores such as Biba and imaroon. MiXTRA is K11's largest tenant, occupying 20,000 square feet (1,900 m2), selling world-famous fashion sports apparel.

There are restaurants on each floor of the mall, totaling over 20, including B2's Miso Cool and DALAT Vietnamese restaurant; The Piazza's Espressamente illy and awfully chocolate; and various others, such as AKU Japanese Restaurant, Al Pasha, Cool Gelato, Ginza Bairin and Pak Loh Chiu Chow Restaurant.

K11 is claimed to be the world's first art mall,[1] integrating the elements of art, people, and nature, with the aim to match New York City's SoHo. With this goal in mind, the mall spent HK$20 million placing numerous art pieces on each floor, totaling 13 groups, all handpicked by K11 Founder and Chairman, Zhi-Gang Zheng (Adrian Cheng). From benches and ceiling ornaments to wall decorations and giant sculptures, the works of art come mostly from local artists, including Lee Chin-fai, Mok, Yat San and Man Fung-yi. The venue also has 19 exhibition panels, displaying works by local artists, throughout the four storeys of the mall between stores. Exhibits change every 3 months. The opening theme was painting exhibition, with 6 or 7 artists participating. The first exhibit unveiled on 18 December 2009.
