KHQN (1480 AM) is a Spanish Variety formatted radio station licensed to serve the community of Spanish Fork, Utah. The station's broadcast license is held by Unica Broadcasting Company, LLC.[2]
Programming
KHQN broadcasts a Spanish Variety format.
History
In the early 1980s, the station carried a Mainstream Rock format. In 1984, the station became one of the only stations in the United States broadcasting Hare Krishna programming full-time. For a year prior to that, KHQN was one of the only two radio stations to broadcast in Spanish, the other being KZZI in Salt Lake City. KHQN had a very successful Spanish language program, RADIO PANORAMA which broadcast for up to 8 hours every Saturday and continued for one year after the Hare Krishna took over the station from the Schofield family, the previous owners. The program consisted of news, popular and traditional music and a call in show for the college Spanish students and speakers as well as Spanish speaking residents from all over Utah County. To help in the building of the Spanish Fork Krishna Temple, Sace Broadcasting, decided to lease the station to David C Kifuri a Seasoned Spanish Broadcaster who had recently moved from South Texas, and on December 7, 1999, KHQN became the first RADIO UNICA Affiliate for the State of Utah, broadcasting a Spanish Talk, News, Sports, Music Variety format, which for the first time started scoring high listener ratings for the station. RADIO UNICA expanded their programming to newly created KBJA 1640 out of West Valley, Utah, dropping KHQN as KBJA offered improved and duplicate coverage. The station changed to a news/talk format in 2006, with ratings declining, KHQN was purchased by UNICA BROADCASTING COMPANY, LLC., and on January 1, 2014, went back to the Spanish Variety format, as RADIO UNICA 1480.
