Khatima is a town and a municipal board in Udham Singh Nagar district in the Indian state of Uttarakhand.

Geography

Khatima is located at 28°55′N 79°58′E / 28.92°N 79.97°E / 28.92; 79.97.[1] It has an average elevation of 299 metres (980 feet).

Climate

The climate is similar to Pantnagar. Temperature climbs up to mid 40°C in summer and goes down to 4°C in foggy winter.

Demographics

As of 2001 India census,[2] Khatima had a population of 1,20,487. Males constitute 54% of the population and females 46%. Khatima has an average literacy rate of 66%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 73%, and female literacy is 58%. In Khatima, 16% of the population is under 6 years of age.

The place has predominantly farmers(75%) with hilly Kumaoni inhabitants who have settled here from hilly region of Kumaun. There's a sizable Sikh and Muslim population in the town . The native resident of Khatima is a tribe named 'Tharu' which in India only can be found in Khatima and its nearby towns. The main languages spoken are Hindi and Kumaoni (Pahari).

Transport

This town is near India-Nepal border. It is well connected to other parts of the region by road and rail. The travel time is about 8 hours to Delhi and 4 hours to Nainital hill station by road. Khatima railway station is on Tanakpur - Pilibhit railway line. The nearest airport is Pantnagar, about 70km from Khatima.

Economy

The town is majorly agrarian. About three fourth people are engaged in farming, rice and wheat are major crop of the region. Sugarcane forms an important part of economic-political scene here. It also has a small hydro power plant at Lohiahead on river Sharda with a capacity of 41.4 MW, and some industries like Polyplex, Ester Industries Ltd. and Khatema fibers.
