Kim Jong-hyun (born April 8, 1990[1]), better known by the mononym Jonghyun, is a South Korean singer, songwriter, and DJ. He is the main vocalist of the South Korean boy group Shinee, and has further participated in S.M. Entertainment's project group S.M. The Ballad. Jonghyun debuted as a solo artist on January 12, 2015 with his first EP, titled Base. In the same year, on September 17, Jonghyun released a compilation album, Story Op.1. On May 24, 2016, Jonghyun released his first studio album, She Is.

Career

2008–14: Career beginnings

Main articles: Shinee and SM The Ballad

In 2008, he was chosen as a member of the group Shinee. The 5-member boy group debuted on May 25, 2008 on SBS's Inkigayo.[2] Jonghyun debuted as a songwriter when writing the Korean lyrics to Shinee's fourth promotional single, "Juliette", which was the featured on their second mini album, "Romeo", released in May 2009. On 6 November 2009, label mate Yesung of Super Junior made a surprise appearance on KBS Music Bank with Shinee in place of Jonghyun, who was recovering from influenza, in a performance of "Ring Ding Dong".[3]

Jonghyun went on to participate in the writing of two songs on Shinee's second Korean studio album "Lucifer", which were released on July 2010. The first, "Up & Down", was co-written with Misfit with the rap being written by groupmate Minho. The second, "욕 (Obsession)", was completely written by Jonghyun minus Minho once again working on his own rap. In October 2010, Jonghyun was one of twenty idols from various South Korean groups that recorded the song "Let's Go" with the purpose of increasing public participation in the 2010 G-20 Seoul summit. He provided his vocals along with other labelmates, such as: Super Junior's Sungmin, Girls' Generation's Seohyun and f(x)'s Luna.[4] In November 2010, it was revealed by S.M. Entertainment that Jonghyun, along with TRAX's Jay, Super Junior's Kyuhyun, and rookie singer, Jino, would be participating in a project group together under their label. The group was revealed to be named SM the Ballad. Rather than pop, the subunit focused more on releasing songs from the ballad or the R&B ballad genre.[5] The group released their debut mini album, Miss You, on November 29, 2010 and debuted on November 28, 2010 on SBS's Inkigayo with their lead single that shared the same title as the mini album. After finishing the promotions for their first track, the subunit continued on with follow up promotions, the focus was another track on their album entitled "Hot Times".[6]

In June 2011, Jonghyun joined KBS's Immortal Songs 2 where singers render their own versions of old songs from music legends and winners are selected by voting.[7] In 2012, Jonghyun co-wrote the lyrics to the song "알람시계" (Alarm Clock)" with Minho, a song about wishing to wake up from the nightmare of a past break-up,[8] and wrote the lyrics to "늘 그자리에 (Honesty)" which was described as a song written for the fans who had stayed by their side with unchanging love until that point. Both songs were featured in the mini album, "Sherlock". For Shinee's Misconceptions series (which is made up of two full albums and a repackage), Jonghyun wrote the lyrics to: "Spoiler", "오르골 (Orgel)", "Dangerous (Medusa II)" (which was co-written with Jo Yun Kyeong), "버리고 가 (Better Off)" and "너와 나의 거리 (Selene 6.23)", the last which was written after Jonghyun drew inspiration from witnessing a super moon in June 2013. In October 2013, Jonghyun wrote the lyrics to "상사병 (Symptoms)" which was featured in Shinee's fifth mini album, "Everybody". In October 2013, Jonghyun debuted as a composer of the track "우울시계 (A Gloomy Clock)" which was featured in IU's third Korean album, "Modern Times". The song, which Jonghyun gifted to IU as a friend, was also co-written by Jonghyun and dubbed a duet.[9] Two months later in December "Red Candle", which was also composed and written by Jonghyun, was released by Son Dam Bi.[10]

After four-years of hiatus for SM the Ballad, S.M. Entertainment announced that the group would be making a comeback on February 4, 2014 with a new line-up; Jonghyun was the only member from the original line-up.[11] It was further revealed that Jonghyun would be participating in a duet with Girls' Generation's Taeyeon called "Breath," which they also promoted together.[12] In July 2014, Jonghyun debuted a special corner called "Blue Night Lyrics, That Man's Composition".[13] He announced the project in June 2014, tweeting:

“ As I started Blue Night, I contemplated on how to incorporate myself well into the program… As expected, the conclusion is communicating with listeners and music! That's why I have prepared a project where I personally write a song pertaining to a listener's story and let you hear it. The name of the corner is ‘Blue Night Lyrics, That Man Composition’. It won’t be aired every week, but it will be aired once every few months as a special corner, so please send in a lot of stories. I’m accepting stories through the homepage. ”

2015–present: Base, song composing, and She Is

On January 2, 2015, it was confirmed that Jonghyun would be making his solo debut on January 12, 2015 with his first mini album, Base.[14] Though the title track was originally the more upbeat "Crazy (Guilty Pleasure)", which Jonghyun wrote the lyrics to, the pre-released track "데자-부 (Déjà-Boo)" was named as a second title track after it charted incredibly well on the digital charts. Both of the tracks were featured and co-composed by Jonghyun's close friend, Zion.T.[15] Jonghyun's debut mini album met much acclaim and drew in attention not only because he participated heavily in the creation process, but because of the multiple collaborations with artists outside of S.M. Entertainment, including: rookie rapper Iron, Younha, Wheesung and Zion.T. The album ended up peaking at first place in its physical release on both the Billboard's World Album chart and the Gaon Album Chart.[16][17]

On January 10, 2015, it was revealed that Jonghyun would be participating in the Mnet's entertainment program 4 Things Show to promote his solo album. His appearance was not only marked as the first episode of the second season, but the first episode of the new year.[18] Taemin, Davichi's Minkyung and Zion.T appeared as Jonghyun's friends during the episode. Later on during the year, it was revealed that Jonghyun would be participating in the debut of the Mnet program, "Monthly Live Connection". The premise of the show revolves around bringing two artists together from different musical backgrounds to collaborate on a song. Jonghyun recorded the show in September and the recording was edited into four episodes which aired in October. Jonghyun's collaboration partner for the show was soloist Jung Joon Young.

In March 2015, Jonghyun both composed and wrote song "Playboy", and was featured in EXO's second Korean album, "EXODUS".[19] A month later, in April 2015, Lim Kim released "No More" on her third mini album, "Simple Mind", which Jonghyun also composed and wrote. He participated in the vocal direction for all of the aforementioned as well.[20] In May 2015, he wrote the title track of Shinee's fourth Korean album, "Odd", "View", making it the second title track he had written for the group since their debut. He also wrote and composed the track "Odd Eye" on the same album, and the co-wrote the lyrics to the track, "Chocolate", on the repackage album released in August 2015.

In August 2015, Jonghyun held his first solo concert "The Story by Jonghyun" as a part of S.M. Entertainment's concert series "The Agit".[21] Jonghyun performed songs from his first mini-album, and also released a new compilation album for each of his songs that were recorded in his radio show. The compilation album, Story Op.1, was released on September 17, 2015.[22] Jonghyun did not promote the album on music shows, but did participate in three free busking concerts to promote it. Following the release of the album, Jonghyun performed a total of 12 sold-out shows, titled The Story by Jonghyun, at the SMTOWN Coex Artium SMTOWN Theatre from October 2–4, October 8–11, and October 16–18. Each concert featured a different guest, including Shinee′s Onew and Taemin, IU, Zion.T, Jung In, Lim Kim, Oksang Dalbit, Coffee Boy, Nine, Lee Ji Hyoung, Soran and poet Ha Sang Wook.[23]

Jonghyun also published a book in September. The book, titled "Skeleton Flower: Things That Have Been Released and Set Free," talks about the singer's songwriting experience and inspirations.[24] As of September 2015, the special corner has taken place four times in total with nine songs being released that were all either: completely written and composed by Jonghyun, or written by Jonghyun with the composition help of his composition group, WeFreaky.[25] In October 2015, Jonghyun was selected as one of the top five K-pop idol vocalists by a survey completed by 40 anonymous music industry officials.[26]

Jonghyun also contributed with the production for Taemin's first mini album Ace with composing and writing the track called "Pretty Boy".[27] He also composed and wrote the track "Already" for Taemin's first full-length solo album, "Press It", which was released in February 2016.[28] Jonghyun later composed and wrote a track called "Breathe" for Lee Hi's album Seoulite, which was released on March 2016.[29] The collaboration marked the first occasion that an artist from S.M. Entertainment had formally collaborated with an artist from YG Entertainment. Jonghyun released a collaboration single with Heritage titled "Your Voice" which is a medium tempo acoustic pop track. It was released on March 18, as part of S.M. Entertainment's SM Station project.[30]

On May 24, 2016, S.M. Entertainment released Jonghyun's first studio album "She Is," consisting of nine tracks, and a music video for the title track "She Is." The album mainly contains songs written and composed by the artist himself.[31] "She Is" was described by Jonghyun as the album that "one can feel his passion as a singer-songwriter the most" and covers various genres such as electro-punk, EDM and R&B.[32]

Personal life

On October 27, 2010, it was confirmed that Jonghyun was in a relationship with actress Shin Se-kyung.[33][34] After nine months of dating, Shin and Jonghyun broke up in June 2011, citing their busy schedules.[35]

On April 1, 2013, Jonghyun was involved in a car accident. When driving home late in the evening, his car went through a guardrail at Dongho Bridge, causing him to injure his nasal bone.[36][37] It was reported by SM Entertainment that he had received surgery on the injury. To focus on recovery, Jonghyun sat out most of Shinee's promotions for their title track, "Why So Serious?", though he rejoined for the final week.[38]
