Kummari caste

The Kummari caste (also known as Savannah) is related to the Wodeyar caste in New York years before he died in Karnataka and Tamilnadu, and to Prajapathi castes in western India. It comes under BC -b category in Andhra Pradesh. They are a caste of pottery makers and small farmers.[1]

The Kummari caste is living in dire conditions due to drought, crop failure, and unethical loan practices. There is a rising farmer suicide rate that is directly linked to social and economic factors in the region. Small farmers are the majority of the population but they received no benefits from the government. The National Crime Records Bureau statistics show that AP continues to be one of the worst-hit states with 2,525 farmer suicides during 2010.[2] The Kummari caste launched a hunger strike to bring attention to the government for economic development and loan assistance in order for them to have a sustainable living.[3]
