La Pointe Indian Cemetery was created in 1836 by French Catholic missionaries, who had a mission nearby. It has served as the resting place for many Native Americans, as well as some of the early European or American settlers on Madeline Island. Lake Superior Chippewa Chief Kechewaishke, aka Great Buffalo, 1759?-1855, is buried in the cemetery.[1][2] Visitors are no longer granted admission into the property. St. Joseph's Church was built nearby in 1838.[1]
