Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan, known in Japan as Nurarihyon's Grandson (Japanese: ぬらりひょんの孫 Hepburn: Nurarihyon no Mago) is an anime adaption based on the manga series written and illustrated by Hiroshi Shiibashi. There were two seasons, each having 26 episodes, with a recap episode in the middle and another at the end.[1] The first season originally aired from July 3, 2010 to December 27, 2010, and broadcast in the United States and Canada on Viz Media's online network, Neon Alley, from October 2, 2012 to March 30, 2013. The opening themes are Fast Forward and Sunshine, both of which are performed by Monkey Majik and the ending themes are Sparky☆Start and Symphonic Dream performed by Katate Size (Aya Hirano, Yui Horie and Ai Maeda). The second season originally aired from July 3, 2011 to December 25, 2011, and broadcast in the United States and Canada on Neon Alley from January 28, 2014 to May 20, 2014. The opening themes are Hoshi no Arika and The LOVE SONG, both of which are performed by LM.C and the endings themes are Orange Smile and Departure performed by Katate Size (Aya Hirano, Yui Horie and Ai Maeda).[2] Two additional 23-minute OVAs were subsequently released in December 4, 2012 and March 4, 2013 after Sennen Makyou finished. They were bundled with the limited edition releases of volumes 24 and 25 of the manga.

Rikuo Nura is the grandson of Nurarihyon, and thus the Third Heir of the Nura Clan. However, being three fourths human, he does not act like the third heir. All of the yōkai of the Nura Clan want him to assume the leadership, but he just wants to be a normal human. His classmate Kiyotsugu invites Rikuo to come with them to the old school building that is said to be haunted by yōkai. They set out to investigate whether the building is really haunted by yōkai or not.[6] | |||

An old ally of the Nura Clan visits to have a discussion about Rikuo's role as the future head of the Nura Clan. Zen is a yōkai with a weak constitution and a long-time supporter of the Nura Clan - their family has lent the Nura Clan their support in return for protection. He was also Rikuo's play-mate when he was little. Zen asks Rikuo about the leadership but he evades the question, explaining that he does not wish to become their leader and Zen leaves doubting the future of the Nura Clan. | |||

A new student, Yura, joins Rikuo's class. She knows a lot about yōkai and can sense their presence. Rikuo's friends form a paranormal investigation group and decide to have the inaugural ceremony at Rikuo's house since they've heard rumors of it being haunted. Much comedy ensues while they explore his house against his wishes. It is revealed that Yura is an onmyōji when the group is attacked by a rat. When Kana and Yura head home they are attacked by a group of yōkai. | |||

The head of the rat clan who kidnapped the girls lures Rikuo to his lair. There he demands that Rikuo write a letter abdicating his position as presumptive heir. On his way home Rikuo meets up with Ryota Neko, the head of the cat clan, who is being chased by minions of the rat clan. Once home he writes the letter that he has been ordered to while Ryota Neko sleeps. Upon hearing that Rikuo plans on giving up his position, Ryota Neko, despite being severely injured, heads off to fight. Rikuo, upon seeing this is moved and his night form takes over. | |||

Rikuo and his friends reach the mountain retreat. While the girls are in the onsen, Rikuo, the boys and Tsurara set off to look for spirits. After being separated from the group, Tsurara is attacked. Just as she's about to be killed Rikuo saves her. | |||

Yura is busy protecting the girls in the onsen when 3 new yōkai appear. They defeat the attackers in short order. Aotabo manages to find Rikuo's two friends and returns them to the inn. Meanwhile Rikuo fights Gozumaru, who tried to kill Tsurara. As Kana is walking up the stairs looking for Rikuo she's sees a ghostly light and gets scared but it turns out to be Rikuo carrying Tsurara. He leaves Tsurara with Kana and heads off to find Gyuki. | |||

Gyuki's past is revealed. As a human he was once known as Umewakamaru, a noble child who excelled at everything. After his father died, his mother left him at a monastery. News of his mother's illness prompted Umewakamaru to want to see her. On the way he was tricked by demons into going the wrong way. There he found that his mother had been devoured by the yōkai, Gyuki. Umewakamaru went mad with grief and killed Gyuki and in his altered mental state he started killing other travelers. In time he also came to be known as Gyuki. It is then that Rikuo's grandfather, Nurarihyon, met him for the first time and after defeating Gyuki in battle requested that he join them as a member of their family. | |||

Rikuo defeats Gyuki. Gyuki decides to commit suicide as atonement for going against the clan, but because he had the clan's best interest at heart, Rikuo stops him. When Kana was six she looked into a mirror possessed by a yōkai that promised to take her away on her thirteenth birthday. Kana becomes trapped in the mirror world but is able to tell her friends about her predicament through a spirit doll that was a gift from Kiyotsugu. Rikuo, in his night form, saves Kana at the last second. Kana, on the way home, now infatuated with Rikuo's night form, wants to know more about him. He takes her to a yōkai hangout. In the morning, Kana asks Rikuo if his night form is his friend. | |||

Hihi, an elder of the Nura Clan, is killed while investigating an incident in Demon Cat Alley. Because of this Rikuo and the elders have to put up with more bodyguards. As the battle progresses, Rikuo makes his way up towards Tamazaki. They spar but Rikuo is brought to his knees when one of Tamazaki's subordinates, Yosuzume, sneaks up and blinds him with her touch. Tamazaki asks Rikuo to join him, but he refuses. In rage, Tamazaki tries to kill Rikuo. Meanwhile, Tsurara, who has been searching for Rikuo since she lost track of at the beginning of the battle, arrives in the nick of time and blocks the blow. Yosuzume then touches Tsurara, blinding her as well as the rest of the battling yōkai. Though blinded, Tsurara and Rikuo work together to defeat Tamazaki's subordinates and Tsurara breaks the spell by freezing Yosuzume. | |||

Rikuo and his clan continue to fight with the tenacious Shikoku yokai who are adamant in conquering Rikuo's Fear. The Shikoku yokai's leader, Tamazaki begins to mercilessly kill his own comrades with the Mao's Hammer in order to absorb their strengths and wield them as his own. Elsewhere, Inugami abducts Kana and holds her hostage, however, she is rescued and Tamazaki slaughters Inugami. This leads to a final showdown between Rikuo and his allies and Tamazaki, who now has acquired ultimate strength. | |||

Special
23 October 2010 (after episode 17 and before episode 18) a 13-minute-long special episode entitled ぬらりひょんの孫 ~激闘 大フットサル大会!奴良組Wカップ!!~ (Nurarihyon no Mago: Gekitou Dai Futtosaru Taikai! Nuragumi W Cup!!) was shown at Jump Super Anime Tour 2010. It was later included in the Blu-ray release of season 1.

In Rikuo's past, Rikuo's father, Rihan Nura, is seen walking with a five-year-old Rikuo and a mysterious black-haired girl. As Rikuo runs ahead, Rihan stops to observe his surroundings; suddenly, the girl stabs him from behind, killing him, while Rikuo can only look on in shock. Three years later, Rikuo is shown playing pranks on his yōkai family and learning the yōkai art of "dine-and-dash" with his grandfather, Nurarihyon. In a meeting with the leaders of the Nura Clan, to everyone's surprise, Nurarihyon declares that his grandson will be the next heir. However, Rikuo, having been told by his friends that all yōkai are evil and upon hearing of the evil deeds of the clan leaders towards humans, refuses. The following day, Rikuo misses the last bus from school and is returned home by Karasu Tengu. Once home he hears that the bus carrying his classmates has been in an accident. Rikuo transforms into his yōkai form for the first time and goes out to rescue them, leading his own Night Parade of a Hundred Demons. The accident is revealed to have been caused by some yōkai from the Nura Clan that feeds on children and whose leader expected to be named the next heir. After Rikuo kills their leader and his posse routs the other yōkai he declares that he will become the Third Heir of the Nura Clan and protect humans. | |||

Two mysterious men arrive in Ukiyoe Town. It is revealed that they are Ryuji and Mamiru Keikain, Yura's older brother and childhood friend who have come to find Yura. During the search, they encounter Aotabo and defeat him. Meanwhile, the Kiyojuji Paranormal Patrol is on another yōkai search, but decide to search for Yura, who has not been attending school recently. Rikuo finds her training in an abandoned place. Moments later, Ryuji appears and realizes that Rikuo is a yōkai. At first, Yura doesn't believe her brother and tries to protect Rikuo but she is defeated. As night falls, Rikuo transforms into his "night" form. | |||

The battle between Ryuji and Rikuo begins. Ryuji uses his ultimate weapon and challenges Rikuo - if he can survive for three minutes, he wins. Rikuo manages to survive but is severely injured. Believing that Rikuo can't move as fast as before, Ryuji attacks him but it was a ruse and Rikuo counters. Mamiru suddenly attacks in order to protect Ryuji, but Rikuo's yōkai comrades appear to protect their master. Surprisingly, Ryuji gets up, surprised that he isn't wounded. He then realizes that Rikuo uses a sword that only cuts a yōkai. Before he and Mamiru leave, he tells Yura the purpose of his visit. After the battle, Yura asks Rikuo whether he is human. He replies that he is a human by day and a yōkai by night but still the same Nura. | |||

400 years ago, the Nura Clan is starting to become the most feared clan in the land. They are different from the other yōkai clans because they do not bother (kill) humans. During this era there is a beautiful woman named Yohime who is said to be "God's gift" because of her power to cure any kind of illness and injuries. Yohime's power is abused by her father who demands huge amounts of money from the people who want to be cured. Yohime's father also controls her movements and keeps her isolated at home, unaware of the outside world. As the news of her beauty and special healing powers spreads, she becomes the target of the Kyoto yōkai, who want to offer her liver to their leader, Hagoromo Gitsune. Nurarihyon has also heard about Yohime and becomes interested in her. One evening, Nurarihyon appears in Yohime's room and declares his interest. Some time later, Nurarihyon again appears in her room and he takes Yohime to the Nura Clan hideout in order to introduce Yohime to his comrades. To their surprise, Nurarihyon asks her to be his wife. However, she doesn't answer and insists that he not visit her again. The following night Yohime's mansion is attacked by yōkai and all of the onmyōji looking after her are killed. When Nurarihyon arrives on the scene, the lone surviving onmyōji reveals that Yohime has been captured by Hagoromo Gitsune's clan. | |||

Nurarihyon rushes to Osaka Castle to save Yohime. He challenges Hagoromo Gitsune and her clan and manages to defeat her with the help of his Hundred Demons and Hidemoto, the 13th head of the Keikain family. Afterwards, Nurarihyon becomes the "Lord of Pandemonium" and his clan is acknowledged as the most powerful clan of all. Yohime realizes that she is in love with Nurarihyon and decides to stay by his side. | |||

Rikuo is desperate to go to Kyoto to save Yura and avenge the death of his father. Nurarihyon is left no choice but to send his grandson to Tono Village to train him and greatly improve his skills as Rikuo's current abilities are lacking. In the village, he meets new friends who help him discover his true self as well as better understand what being Nurarihyon means. | |||

Rikuo's training continues. At the same time, a deputation of Kyoto yōkai come to Tono Village to ask Akagappa, the leader of the village, to help Hagoromo Gitsune fulfill her goal. Akagappa refuses to help them. The Kyoto yōkai are preparing to leave the place when they spot Rikuo and attempt to kill him. During the fight, Rikuo comes to understand the real power of Nurarihyon and manages to cut the fear of his enemy. The enemies retreat, saying that they will defeat him together with his clan and all onmyōji. The invasion of Hagoromo Gitsune has finally started. | |||

At the Seieji Temple, the 5th seal is broken. Only four seals prevent Hagoromo Gitsune from achieving her goal. Yura and Mamiru train under Ryuji's tutelage while Akifusa, Masatsugu and Pato, the onmyōji guardians of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd seals located at Nijo Castle, Sokokuji Temple, and Rokukinji Temple proceed with their plan to kill Hagoromo Gitsune at the Nishihoganji Temple (fourth seal). In Tono, Rikuo hears that skilled onmyōji are being hunted down one by one and decides to return home to gather his night parade of demons before heading to Kyoto. His friends among the Tono yōkai decide to accompany him. | |||

Tsurara and Aotabo reach Kyoto where they meet Yura, who rescues the Kiyojuji Paranormal Patrol from a Kyoto yōkai attack. Meanwhile the Sokokuji Temple (second seal) is under attack from an unexpected enemy, Akifusa. Yura comes to reinforce the second seal defense and is almost killed by Akifusa but Ryuji intervenes. | |||

Akifusa, envious of Yura's rising status as presumptive heir, has been possessed by Minagoroshi Jizo and is aiding the Kyoto yōkai in destroying Keikain barriers. Ryuji defeats Akifusa but Hagoromo Gitsune and her night parade appear scene and his overmatched. Yura and Mamiru appear and Yura uses her Hagun technique, guided by Hidemoto, to purge the possessed Akifusa. Yura and other onmyoji then retreat. Meanwhile, conflict breaks out between Itaku and Kubinashi as they travel to Kyoto on the Nura Clan's flying ship. | |||

Itaku and Kubinashi continue to fight until Zen intervenes and restores order. Hakuzozu, the gatekeeper of Kyoto interdicts the flying ship with a yōkai army and challenges Rikuo to a duel. Rikuo uses his new techniques and destroys the Dakini, Hakuzozu's weapon. The defeated Hakuzozu asks for death but Rikuo spares him and asks him to join his side. Although their leader was defeated, the yōkai army begins to attack the flying ship as it nears the dark outskirts of Kyoto. | |||

Rikuo and his clan land their damaged ship on a river in downtown Kyoto. Although Hakuzozu refuses to join Rikuo, he advises him to go to the Fushime Inari Shrine, location of the eighth seal. As Rikuo and his Night Parade fight their way through Kyoto, Yura, Hidemoto and other onmyōji gather at Kekain house to discuss a battle plan to defeat Hagoromo Gitsune by using Hagun together with Nenekirimaru. Tsurara bursts into the meeting to inform them that Nura Clan aid is on its way. | |||

Rikuo and his Night Parade go to the summit of the Forest of Torii. There Awashima picks up a rock and unknown to anyone in the group except Kurotabo is instantly tagged to be spirited away. She lags behind the others and is spirited away by a boy and the Nijunanamen Senju Mukade. Once in the realm of Mukade, Awashima is attacked through the numerous torii scattered around the landscape. She is given a glimmer of hope when Kurotabo pierces Mukade's world but is unable to help any further. Remembering Amezo's advice about dealing with yōkai who appear to be invincible in their own territories, Awashima is able to defeat Mukade and escape the Forest of The Lost. Hidemoto then arrives and tells the Rikuo and his Night Parade what they have to do to defeat Hagoromo Gitsune. Suddenly, Tsuchigumo appears before the allied forces looking for a challenging foe to fight. | |||

Rikuo and his Night Parade are unable to defeat Tsuchigumo no matter how many times they try. Rikuo continues to fight even though morning has come and he is in his human form. Impressed by their tenacity, Tsuchigumo retreats to Sokokuji Temple, taking Tsurara as a hostage to ensure that Rikuo will come after him. At the Nijo Castle area (first seal), Hagoromo Gitsune enters Nuegaike Pond where the last seal is located and yet to be broken. Gyuki and Great Tengu of Mount Kurama come to Kyoto to train Rikuo for the upcoming battle. | |||

Hagoromo Gitsune breaks the first seal and starts to gather human livers for the birth of Nue. While Rikuo trains, Kejoro tries to raise the morale of the Nura clan. Kubinashi, disillusioned by recent events, decides to go out and kill Kyoto yōkai on his own. Kejoro follows him and at the Ryuenji Temple (sixth seal) they encounter Ibaraki Doji. At Kekain house, Akifusa duels with Shokera after it defeats Yura's grandfather and the gathered onmyōji. | |||

At Kekain house, Aotabo is roused to fight Shokera in order to protect the Kiyojuji Paranormal Patrol. At Ryuenji Temple, Kubinashi and Kejoro are about to defeat Ibaraki Doji when Kidomaru arrives increasing the odds against them. Suddenly, a seal falls from the sky. Yura and Hidetomo have resealed the Fushime-Inari Shrine and Hashira Villa, and now Ryuenji Temple (the eighth, seventh and sixth seals). By doing so they hope to trap Hagoromo Gitsune in Nijo Castle (the first seal). | |||

Kidomaru defeats Yura and is about to take her to Hagoromo Gitsune but Ryuji, Mamiru, Kurotabo and Kappa intervene. Kappa takes Yura, Kubinashi and Kejoro to Kakain house where Akifusa and Aotabo have defeated Shokera. Yura's grandfather officially passes the authority of Keikain House to her and dies. Rikuo's training is ongoing. As he and the others rest, a group of Kyoto yōkai attacks. Gozumaru is injured and Mezumaru removes him from the field. Despite his weak constitution, Zen wants to fight. After an intense argument, Rikuo lets Zen fight their enemies and is surprised when he is able to channel Zen's Fear along with his own. | |||

Now that Rikuo has mastered the Matoi technique, the allied counterattack begins. Rikuo and his Night Parade retake the Seieji, Nishihoganji, and Rokukinji temples (fifth, fourth and third seals) which are resealed and head straight to Sokokuji Temple (second seal) to rescue Tsurara. Feeling hopeless, Tsurara tries to commit suicide but Rikuo and others came in a nick of time. Rikuo gains Tsurara's trust and together they fight using the Matoi technique, managing to sever one of Tsuchigumo's arms. Unfazed, Tsuchigumo seals the fighting area and repeatedly attacks Rikuo who is able to avoid being mauled. Tsurara, Zen and the Tono yōkai leap over the spider barrier to aid Rikuo. | |||

Rikuo once again uses the Matoi technique, this time with Itaku, and they are able to defeat Tsuchigumo. Tsuchigumo leaves so he can gather his strength to challenge Nue. At the Nuegaike Pond, Hagoromo Gitsune is about to give birth to Nue. Suddenly, although he is too weak to fight, Nurarihyon appears before her asking questions about his son's murder. Distracted by the surroundings, Nurarihyon is surrounded by enemies. Karasu Tengu, who has followed Nurarihyon rescues him but they are blinded by Yosuzume. Nurarihyon is stabbed by the Maō's Hammer and identifies his attacker as Minagoroshi Jizo. Kidomaru informs the rest of the Kyoto yōkai that Hagoromo Gitsune is going on a labor. At the same time, Rikuo and his Night Parade approach the gate of Nijo Castle. | |||

After slaying Hagoromo Gitsune's minions, the allied forces of the Nura Clan and Keikain House storm the castle where they encounter Kidomaru. Kidomaru traps them in Ranjomon Gate, where he is able to defeat Rikuo and Tsurara. Kurotabo then volunteers to use Matoi with Rikuo. As they fight, he teaches Rikuo about different ways of using Matoi which allows them to defeat Kidomaru. | |||

Rikuo and Kurotabo finally defeat Kidomaru but it is too late - Nue has been born. Above the castle, Mamiru and Ryuji distract Hagoromo Gitsune to allow Yura and Hidemoto to seal Nue in his chrysalis, but Tsuchigumo interferes due to his desire to fight Nue. Rikuo rescues Ryuji and duels with Hagoromo Gitsune as Minagoroshi Jizo tries to scare Tsuchigumo off with the Maō's Hammer. | |||

Ibaraki Doji and Kyokotsu are defeated by Kubinashi, Kejoro, Jami and Aotabo. The battle between Hagoromo Gitsune and Rikuo continues until Hagoromo Gitsune pins Rikuo down. She is about to kill Rikuo but the memories of her host come to her mind and disturb her. In her moment of distraction, Rikuo joins with Yura and together they force Hagoromo Gitsune from the host body. Unfortunately, Nue has finally come out of his cocoon. Hagoromo Gitsune realizes that it was Seimei and Minagoroshi Jizo who had manipulated events around her. Despite all that she has done to ensure his reincarnation, Seimei betrays Hagoromo Gitsune and sends her to Hell. Recovered from his blindness, Tsuchigumo challenges Nue. | |||

To the surprise of everyone, Nue is able to defeat Tsuchigumo almost effortlessly. Nurarihyon orders Gyuki and his fellows to delay Nue. Hagoromo Gitsune's host is revealed to be Yamabuki Otome, Rihan's first wife. Before she dies, Yamabuki Otome reveals that as part of their plan to eliminate Rihan, Abe no Seimei and Sanmoto Gorozaemon used Soul Rebirth on her and manipulated her memories. She was taken into Rihan's house and when conditions were right, she killed him. Rikuo, together with the Nura Clan and the Tono yōkai, attack Nue but are unable to harm him with their haphazard attacks. | |||

Rikuo gathers the combined fear of his Night Parade of a Hundred Demons by using the Matoi technique and attacks Nue. To Nue's surprise his body starts to fall apart. Realizing that his body still needs to adjust to the human world Nue retreats to Hell, taking his followers with him, but promising to return to finish the fight. Exhilaration fills the allies at their unexpected victory. Rikuo tells his grandfather to make him the Third Heir to the Nura Clan and states that he is willing to undergo any training to become stronger. Afterwards, Hidemoto and Nurarihyon discuss matters and estimate that they have about a year before Nue returns. Resting at home, Rikuo dreams of his father and grandfather. When he wakes up he joins the concil where Nurarihyon informs everyone that there will be an all-out war against Nue clan and its retainers. Rikuo then informs his subordinates that the Night Parade of a Hundred Demons he leads will follow a code of honor and not hurt humans. | |||
