Loon Mountain hosts more skiers than any other resort in the state. The resort was founded in the 1960s.[1]

On September 19, 2007, Boyne Resorts, a Michigan-based resort company, announced it had acquired the lease to operate Loon from Booth Creek Ski Holdings.[2] In 2011 the resort was expanded by four trails. It also increased the number of snow guns by 170 to a total of 600, at a total cost of $1.4 million.[3]

One notable activity available during the summer at the resort is the Guest Train Engineer Program, allowing guests to learn how to operate a live steam locomotive on the 2 ft (610 mm) narrow gauge J.E. Henry Railway.[4]
