Macedonia participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 2014 in Copenhagen, Denmark. Their entry was selected through an internal selection, organised by the Macedonian broadcaster Macedonian Radio Television (MRT). Macedonia was represented by the song "To the Sky" performed by Tijana, which failed to qualify from the second semi-final, placing 13th with a score of 33 points. The song was written by Elena Risteska, Darko Dimitrov and Lazar Cvetkoski.

Internal selection

On 28 August 2013, Tijana Dapčević was announced as the Macedonian representative for the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest during the MRT evening news programme Dnevnik.[1] Dapčević attempted to represent Macedonia previously by participating in their national final on three occasions: in 1996 placing third with the song "Ti prostuvam", in 2002 placing fourth with the song "Izgrev" and in 2005 competing in the artist selection. She also participated in Serbia and Montenegro's national final in 2006, placing eighth with the song "Greh".

Dapčević performed the song "To the Sky" at the 2014 Contest. The song was composed by Darko Dimitrov and Lazar Cvetkoski with lyrics by Elena Risteska. The English version of the song also features lyrics by Laura Rosca. Dimitrov and Cvetkoski were also the composers of the 2013 Macedonian Eurovision entry "Pred da se razdeni", while Dimitrov also composed the 2006 Macedonian Eurovision entry "Ninanajna" which was performed by Elena Risteska. Dapčević also recorded a Macedonian version of the song titled "Tamu kaj što pripagjam" (There where I belong).[2] Earlier in November 2013, Dapčević had announced that the entry would be called "Pobeda" (Victory), however the title was later revealed to be the working title for the song.[3][4] Dapčević received over fifty songs from composers across the Balkan region but favoured the three songs she received from Darko Dimitrov.[2]

The presentation of the entry took place on 22 February 2014 during a special edition of the MRT programme Hit na mesecot (Hit of the Month), hosted by Aleksandra Jovanovska and Marko Mark.[4]

At Eurovision

During the semi-final allocation draw on 20 January 2014 at the Copenhagen City Hall, Macedonia was drawn to compete in the second half of the second semi-final on 8 May 2014.[5] In the second semi-final, the producers of the show decided that Macedonia would perform 11th, following Belarus and preceding Switzerland.[6] Macedonia failed to qualify from the second semi-final, placing 13th in a field of 15 songs with a score of 33 points.

Tijana Dapčević was joined on stage by her younger sister Tamara Todevska, who performed as a backing vocalist.[7] Todevska previously represented Macedonia in the Eurovision Song Contest 2008. Dimitar Andonovski and Nikola Perevski - Pere also joined Dapčević on stage as backing vocalists along with choreographer and dancer Dejan Kolarov.[8] The Macedonian performance featured Tijana performing and interacting with the backing dancer while the LED screens projected white moving lines and concentric patterns.[9]

In Macedonia, both the semi-finals and the final were broadcast on MRT 1, MRT Sat and Radio Skopje with commentary by Karolina Petkovska.[10][11][12] The Macedonian spokesperson revealing the result of the Macedonian vote in the final was Marko Mark.[13]
