Maurice Kirya is a Ugandan musician[1][2] and actor.[3] He won RFI’s 2010 Discoveries Music Award.[4][5] He won prize money plus a grant worth 18,000 euros to develop his career. He staged performances in Paris plus a year-long tour of Africa where he toured over 35 countries.[6] He was nominated for the most gifted afro pop video of the year in the 2012 channel O video music awards.[7] He was one of the three Ugandan artists to perform at the inaugural annual Tribe One Festival, in South Africa.[8]
Music
Maurice is a multiple award winning artist. He has been singing professionally for over 10 years.[9] His style of Music is called “Mwooyo”,[10] a Luganda word for soul. Kirya released his maiden album in late 2009. The Album was an instant success selling both locally and internationally. It was the same album that won Maurice the 2010 RFI Discoveries award across Africa beatig over 500 musicians. He toured over 35 Countries and 40 Cities across Africa, Europe and America in 2011. He was featured on BBC, CNN, Voice of America and RFI. He holds multiple accolades inclusive of the RFI Award (France), E-World Music Awards (LA), Museke Music Awards (New York), KORA Award, KISIMA Awards (Kenya), PAM awards (Uganda).[11] He has grown to be an inspiration and mentor to many young Ugandan and African musicians including Undercover Brothers Ug whose concert and launch of their first album At Dawn he attended and performed at on December 13, 2014.
