Merchant Prince II was panned by critics. 1Up called the game "a less misleading Classic Gaming label" saying "Mainstream consumers pulled in by the fascinating topic are—once again— going to feel ripped off, confused, dumb, and jaded toward turn-based strategy games"[3] William Abner of Gamespy noted that the game is very similar to the original.[4] Steve Butts of IGN called the game "a really excellent game that's showing its age", but noted its lack of polish.[5]
